Just wondering sherbros....if somehow a third party candidate ran, and lets say they got a little bit more than 1/3rd of electoral votes, more than the Democratic/Republican candidates....While also winning the popular just by a bit....Should this person be president?

The reason I ask this, is although the person clearly won the election, in terms of what people want...The candidate failed to get the 270 electoral votes required thus the house of representatives will pick

(The scenario can also apply to a third party candidate that got 49% of the electoral/popular vote but failed to meet the 270 electoral vote requirement)

    Link

Now it becomes a matter of the house of representatives honoring what the American people picked.....but they don't have to, they have the right to vote however they like...Thus dooming the third party candidate, because they will probably pick either the Democrat/Republican.

To me this shows how the game is rigged to have either a democrat/republican as president...it's basically impossible for a third party to be president unless they get 270 electoral votes..otherwise forget about it.

So anyways shebros? what you think? is the game rigged? should the house of representatives pick who the American people elected or should they just do whatever they want, since that's what the games rules are?

There will be no third party president unless a third party starts winning seats in congress.

This, I voted Libertarian just to get them some numbers. All 3rd parties are basically puny and have no power outside some small local offices.

    and that's fucked up IMO.

I think if this were to ever happen, a third party canidate getting 34-49% of the popular/electoral vote, then both parties, Republicans/Democrats should honor what the American people picked.

Yes I know they can pick for whoever and it will be within their "right" but going against the will of the American people would be dirty as fuck IMO.

They have a chance...if Democrats/Republicans chose to honor what the American people picked or they get 270+ electoral votes (basically impossible).

The game is rigged pretty badly against third parties.

Third parties need to stop worrying about the presidency and focus on winning local elections. It's going to take decades for a third party to have any power.

If they have the largest percentage of votes, I don't see how they wouldn't win.

If no candidate gets 270 electoral votes, I’d look to whoever can build a coalition government that can cover a majority of voters. That would make things very difficult for third party candidates.

If a 3rd party candidate wins 70% of the popular vote, can they even win the election? Or do the people in Congress just vote in whichever D/R they want anyway and tell us that's the winner?

I just don't see it happening. The dualities of life are always playing out, and this includes the two party system. Man and woman, hot and cold, 0 and 1, up and down, negative charge and positive charge, this is just another manifestation of that, it can't be helped. Although it is possible with one party to be replaced with another party, but it would still be a two party dominated system.

Trumps basically a third party candidate. He wrecked the career politicians like Bush, Rubio, Cruz.
Republicans basically can't win putting out a traditional establishment career white/latino white politican.

I think the Democrats will also soon find out that you can't win with an old career politician white guy.

If the Rock or Oprah went independent they would win in a landslide.

The EC was originally conceived as kind of a primary, as the founders didn't anticipate parties and figured that candidates usually wouldn't get a majority in the EC. The idea was that the House would usually decide the presidency. In a way, that would be better in that you would have less competing claims to true legitimacy if the House and the presidency were always aligned. It would also be a bit of a problem if candidates opposed by the majority of the country were routinely winning the presidency.
