What are some things you do that are technically "incorrect," but you em anyway and they work for you?

For me, the most blatant thing is that I always cross my feet when I do armbars...

The most common that I did, and that I see new people do are as follows:

1. crossing the ankles in the armbar - I guess it's ok, it just makes it harder to pinch your knees together, which is you getting int he way of yourself really

2. not locking down the triangle properly - I see guys all the time with their toes behind their knee when figure 4ing their legs instead of their ankle, this makes for a really weak triangle. Also, when people grab their toes instead of their shin to hold their opponent's head down when they get ready to triangle. Also not pulling the head down.

3. Passing the guard with one arm in, one arm out - this is death by 1,000 triangles

Not if you maintain proper posture throughout the pass. Which brings me to my point of what many do wrong which is a lack of posture when passing the guard, which makes half the triangles performed out there possible.

Also too many people turn to their knees and give up the back to avoid points scored from their guard being passed.

Crossing the ankle isn't "wrong", it's just discouraged for new guys for the reason mentioned above: It's more important to learn to squeeze your knees. Once you have that down, it is a matter of preference for the most part, and is actually beneficial in some positions.

the only time I ever pass one in one out is if I have a pinned tightly on the "arm out" side. No matter how good your posture is, if a guy shoots his hips up and gets a leg over your shoulder, it's going to be very hard to maintain posture. Even if he doesn't get the triangle, he can threaten you with an armbar or omoplata, which is why I really rarely prefer to pass with one in, one out.

Bad base. Thats just plain wrong.
Playin a slow, controlling game vs playing a quick lotsa position changes typa game = preference.

If your passing one in one out , it works pretty nice to pin the guys other leg down with your hand ala Griffen vs Mahood. You can also go to the inside by replacing your knee where your hand was to trap his leg and keeping his other leg on your shoulder. Thats my favourite pass , its the only one i can work on my coach and he has siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick super slick triangles.

I pass all the time with one arm and one arm out, just watch your base, keep your controlling arm stiff and you are safe.
