I’m in a job where I go to peoples house and work on their stuff. The best thing you can do is check in everyonce in a while and ask if he needs anything. I hate when my customers hover over me and I hate when they disappear and I can’t find them.

It's a rental, leave him to his own devices. If it was your own house I'd say maybe stay w/i earshot to make sure he doesn't do anything to your existing heater and then call you over 'Buddy you ain't gonna believe what I found!'
