The UFC laid the blueprint with the BMF belt and Dana and the upper levels executives have made it very clear they will not allow GSP to garner a LW title shot due to his double vacating of the WW and MW belts (which is ironic considering Conor vacated two belts as well)

The UFC realizes GSP's marketability and Khabib and Conor both have said they want to fight him.

I see the UFC protecting their golden gooses by having this fight at 165 or WW and giving the fight a fictional belt named "GOAT Belt"

The belt is nonsense but so is the BMF belt. Should GSP beats either guy they still have momentum in the LW or possibly WW divisions while making boatloads of money for the organization and fighters involved. This would be an excellent fight to have at the new Raiders stadium in Vegas or a stadium somewhere.

I believe Khabib wants GSP after Tony and his need to fight GSP will be the catalyst to make all of this happen. Dana can use coordinating and GSP/Khabib this fight as leverage to make Khabib sign for the LW rematch with Conor and insures that Khabib is still champion when that fight may occur. Perhaps Khabib signs an extension as well as a bargaining chip to getting his dream fight with GSP.

Coles Notes:

GSP fights Conor/Khabib at 165 or WW under guise of GOAT Belt
Everyone makes boatloads of money
Conor and Khabib don't lose momentum at 155 or 170 and protects their championship rematch at 155.

A GOAT belt with Khabib and Conor in the mix but not Fedor, Anderson and Jones... that would be even more tragic than the BMF belt.
 
Dana has said before that he believes Jon Jones is the GOAT.

I agree but please view the fight under the lense of sports entertainment and super fights.

Conor vs GSP or GSP vs Khabib makes more money and generates more interest than 99% of the other fights that could be booked. From a business standpoint, this is a cash-generating idea with huge upside.

Totally agree. We are dealing with Dana's huge ego here and disdain for GSP. He's a savvy businessman and this route gives him the opportunity to make his golden geese and Conor and Khabib happy, prevents GSP from getting the LW title he covets, makes boatloads of money and potentially damages GSP's legacy with a defeat.
 
GSP being in a "GOAT" fight makes sense.

Conor or Khabib in a "GOAT" fight does not make sense. They're not at that level.

Perspectives and marketing.

Khabib undefeated and "moving up" to cement his legacy
Conor only other active 2 division champ.
Fighting and beating someone who many consider "GOAT" (GSP) in its own right could market the GOAT belt.

There are paths to market this as a GOAT fight without digging too deep for evidence to support the claim.

It' a good fight. Don't know if Khabib deserves to be in a GOAT title fight yet though.

Silly to think one win puts them in the same realm as the Fedors, Jones, GSPs and Silvas.

Beating way, way past prime in GSP in 2020 doesn't hold the same water as beating 30 year old GSP.

Khabib beating Conor again certainly wouldn't put him in the GOAT realm. Same if Conor beat Khabib. More work to do than that.

Conor and Khabib both help stake their claim as GOAT with a win over GSP no doubt.

You and I know that but to the casual fan....not so much. GSP is MMA royalty and is on a 13 fight win streak. 2 division champ. Stepping in the octagon with him raises anyone's profile win or lose.

and it should raise their stock huge. GSP even now, is about as good of a win as any LW win. Tony or Khabib would arguably only be a better win right now because they're still active and on huge win streaks.
