Interim titles establish who is to be definitively given the next title shot. They say that this guy is the number two in the division. It basically formalises the idea of the number one contender fight. If someone has the interim title, you can't bring in a Nate Diaz or a Dan Henderson for a title shot because you think it'll make more money. Rather than being a negative result of a focus on money over legitimacy, interim belts help to combat this tendency.

I think the idea of interim belts, or number one contender belts, should be rolled out across all weight divisions.

The last thing they need is more interim belts.

    One champion; one belt.

That's the way it should be. No one dreams of becoming the interim champion.

Exactly, it's not a real belt. But it's a guarantee that the deserving guy gets the next title shot.

Dana could simply keep his word when he promiss that the winner of X vs Y gets the next title shot.

If the interim champ gets hurt, and they have to replace him, does that man become the interim interim champ? Maybe the: "once in a generation temporary place holder."

This is a slippery slope, and I am not in the mood to toboggan!

Correction: I am in the mood to toboggan, there goes my morning.

Interim belt is not the solution either then. What's next, a fifth place ribbon?

The origin was a valid one, you keep the division rolling when the champ is out and you're not sure when he comes back. If you were, you'd just make contender fights. If the champ doesn't come back, whether it's a long-term injury, retirement, leaving the division for longer than the mandatory defense rule applies, etc, the Interim champ becomes the real one.

They did it right when Mir had that horrible accident, or when Cruz's knee kept tearing. Placeholders to keep contenders getting shots. But they realized Unifying title fights make money and now the original purpose is lost and people think it's for the #1 contender, when it's really only used to boost sales.

This is a very bad idea.

Also: if you think they won't screw over an interim belt holder, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Soon the poll off "who is the greatest interim champion" will be needed.

There should be no set system when it comes to interim belts IMO. UFC should continue to improvise on the fly and make the best of the situation. As long as the top fighters is fighting each other, and interims belts gives fighters more power and more $, I'm OK with interims being a new quick fix. At the end of the day Im a hardcore fan and I know what Im watching, and whats at stake.

In the event a severe injury with extended time away to recover and heal comes up, that is the ONLY reason when an interim title should be created. All other reasons are bullshit. Pop for juicing... stripped. Get locked up... stripped. Voluntarily taking time off... stripped.

Simply creating titles to justify situations is the same as marketing to sheep. If you treat your own fan base like lemmings, what does that say for you as an organization?

Obviously, when Aldo and Edgar was originally made an interim title fight on the same card the FW champ was scheduled to be fighting a LW was one of the most ridiculous and blatantly transparent things the UFC has ever done. It's things like this that devalues the title in the first place.

Not really. Remember when Aldo was getting shit on for refusing to "defend" the interim?
