The UFC really disappoints me as a fan of MMA.

That shouldn't be used to deny someone if they've beaten most of the contenders in their division. Fiorot also got a title shot with nothing but decisions.

Strickland and Colby are arguably more boring than Movsar yet keep getting gifted title shots.

At least Movsar had exciting fights with Aljo, Diego, and Allen. You've earned it if you're cleaning out your division like he has.

The rankings are a joke at this point.
Strickland at least has the capacity to be exciting. You have to be very into grappling to enjoy a Movsar fight.
The Diego fight was exciting because Diego made it interesting.
The Allen fight sucked, in my opinion.
The Algo fight was interesting from a tactical standpoint, but it wasn't exciting in any traditional sense.
He probably should have lost at least his last two and rarely fights, it's not hard to see why he gets passed up.

It looks like Volk vs Yair II is being made instead of Volk vs Evloev, the crazy thing is that it should have been Evloev vs Volk for the title in the first place, he's undefeated and already beat Lopes. Its clear the UFC avoids and prolongs certain fighters their paths to rankings and titles while also clearing the way and fast tracking other more marketable guys....its just like boxing in all the worst ways.

Islams the p4p best fighter in MMA but his title reign sucked, Moicano isn't a top 10 caliber guy, Poirier is the past TWO LW champs leftovers and the Volk rematch was idiotic and pointless in the way that it was scheduled. Its not Islams fault Arman pulled out the last second but that was the most valid fight out there and the UFC refused to reschedule it. Now Topuria is in the division and Paddy is actualizing his star power before our eyes...Lightweight just got interesting for the first time in years and the champ left. Great timing idiots.

Topuria is the same is Islam but worse, talks shit and has a beef with Evloev his entire career...Evloev is 19-0 and 9-0 in the UFC...of course he dips before taking that fight. What else? Jean Silva looks like a worldbeater and is surging...but no he doesn't face actual contenders in their primes who are surging, he beats the old guard...an absolutely aged and battered Volk who was coming off a 5 round war and then a huge headkick KO loss while jumping up and down weight classes in at 34-35 and Holloway, who while being a great win...I dont know, I wanted to see something new.

I was listening to Jack Slack the other day talk about how exciting the premise of the contender series was and that he tried to follow it the first few seasons but gave up when he realized it mostly "sucks shit" and I've shared this stance myself...I follow the prospect scene of the sport and the contender series does about a D or C grade at best at actually acquiring the best up and coming talent in the world...its not good.

Signing Patchy was awesome and Pico wasn't a bad signing but there's a reality that not only do they do a terrible job Signing the best prospects, they pass on signing high dollar world class talent too like Vartanyan, Keita, Parnasse, Hughes, Soldic, Baki, Doumbe etc. All the time. Guys like Gamrot are on the record saying they had to take a paycut to get a UFC contract, nuts.

Every PPV is so bad it's insane, I haven't watched a full card in ages. The talent in the sport globally is deeper than ever but these UFC cards are at an all time low. We evaluate cards differently but for me I want relevant divisional fights, showcases of good talent, prospects in fights that answer questions and actual quality prospects not your 8-1 cans that are pushing 30. I also want contenders and whatnot too of course. Pass on the women fighting, straight up.

Just disappointed that as the sport is more global than ever and more mainstream than ever, the UFC is worth 12.3 Billion and still pays its fighters like trash and the quality is just getting worse.

Agree with your post.

I thibk the only thing id add is the twin problems of too many, watered down cards and related to that, a lack of marketing to introduce/bond the audience with the fighters. This goes down to the removal of fighters personal shorts, and the cutting of walk-outs. These things threateb the hegemony of the ufc brand with the risk that an individual fighter could become more popular than the ufc brand as we saw with conor.

But the side effect of this is that all the fighters are relatively unknown to us, or they all just sort of seem the same , so we don't give a shit. We don't associate personality with the individual fighters, they are just rankings numbers - rankings which the ufc only sort-of pays attention to in deciding matchups, as you pointed out.

at the risk of sounding reductionist, this is the problem with a multibillion dollar company - there are simply too many shareholders involved with too much money to lose to do anything but pursue short term profits. There won't be any l9ngterm development of the brand or culture, or of the individual fighters, only quarterly reports displaying growth.

Poor matchmaking is plaguing the UFC. Not just in undeserved title shots, but also in building contenders. There is no vision, they matchmake themselves into corners leaving no interesting contenders. Then we get stuck with rematches and nonsense fights nobody wants.

Truly, we've been painted into a corner here.

Throwing away any sort of long term legitimacy of the rankings in order to pursue the biggest short term matchup.

Ufc is autocanabalizing. Eroding the foundations that support the legitimacy of mma as a sport, in order to cash out on the next big matchup.

Just a fucking pile of slaughtered geese, hunting for golden eggs.

Most people that have been watching long enough can see that the UFC has declined big time.
started with WME acquisition and has progressively gotten worse. Last year was pretty bad with match making, and crazy as this sounds, this year appears to be even worse somehow.

Like any good product

After time, its starts to focus on profits, and waters down the product

Also pumps more (crappy) product into the atmosphere

We can’t be the fans we once were and we have to accept that

Sherdog is like this dark alley where I run off to when nobody is looking to discuss things mma cause not a single soul I know cares about it

Most people that have been watching long enough can see that the UFC has declined big time. It all started with covid and ESPN, and then came Power Slap.
I used to laugh and hand wave away the “ufc is dying” stuff for a long time. But now, I don’t think it’s hyperbole. The product has taken a nosedive in the last several years. I skip some cards entirely now which was unfathomable just a few years ago when I watched all of them top to bottom.

They suck at matchmaking and they fill cards with subpar talent. They can’t build contenders and just chase short term cash grabs.

I don't get why Evloev is considered boring, he is a super dominant grappler.

Evloev can't finish his dinner, that's why he hasn't got a shot. If he had pulled out one measley finish they'd have given him one. I think if he wins again they'll probably just give in and give him one.

They should have put him in with Topuria who would likely have murdered him and solved the issue for them.

It's dying, haven't you heard?

I don't like the matchup if it does indeed go down, but considering all the good fights we get, it's not gonna break it for me.

Think about it, UFC puts out so many quality fights, sherdoggers actually cry and get upset that there is TOO much MMA. Can you believe that? The stupidity

Yeah sometimes they make fights I dont like, oh well. Majority are good fights and the right fights. I get this from a business POV, Yair was promised the title fight cause they were going to Mexico for a PPV and they probably thought/hoped Lopes beat Volk and it didnt happen.

Rountree shouldnt have gotten the Alex fight, Colby shouldnt have gotten title shot. Whatever.

Some people would prefer good, stacked cards, instead of watered down cards. Can you imagine that?
