Was wondering if anyone can share some insight on the truck roll from half guard no-gi?

This vid it shows it from mount 6:15

7:07 has it from half guard, but its a fast clip and it's hard for me to understand how it works since his opponent is flat on his back.

He does them wicked on this vid!

I seen vids on youtube, but the ones I saw set up for twister or has instructional in gi.

Does the truck roll work on heavier opponents? 20-50lbs difference?

I need more of an detailed explanation or vid how the truck roll works to get the back, I know its known to set up the twister, but I would like to learn to take the back.

If your opponent has you in half guard your on top their right leg is on the mat your right leg caught in the middle of both their legs, their not flat on their back their on their right shoulder, How can the truck roll be set up from that position?

Thanks!

Search rolling back take on youtube you will find better ones, or better yet get Ryan Halls back attacks dvd. The truck position is essentially the turtle where you have one hook in and control of the other leg, you should be able to get the back rather than twister control.

If you're really interested in the truck roll and attacking the back in general, I'd highly recommend picking up Ryan Hall's back attack DVD. He talks a lot about the rolling back take, it's the only thorough and high quality instructional I've seen. It's not a simple move to pull off mostly because you're pretty much in the same position as the bottom guy while mid roll so if you slip up even a little you risk getting your own back taken.

If you're in top half and your right leg is hooking your opponent's right leg, make sure your right knee is on the ground. You roll on your right shoulder, maintaining that leg hook. When you complete the roll, you'll end up in the truck position. Make sure you figure four your legs, or establish lockdown because your opponent will immediately try to escape his leg by kicking your leg off his. You also want to control his free leg by grabbing the toes. From here, you have many options. Uchi mata is correct that they can easily reverse you, or they can even stop you from rolling if they're familiar with it.

The version I just explained is bravos version, never seen the Ryan Hall version. The truck is a big position in 10th Planet. It's considered a kill zone.

The one from three quarter guard is called the ninja roll or samurai roll. I forget which one it is.

If you want to see more truck entries, look up geo martinez truck entries. He's one of bravos top students.

Oh, and I've done this on bigger guys. I've never tried it on someone 50 lbs heavier though. But they're probably gonna be too slow to defend it, plus their weight is probably gonna help you since they're anchored down.

I'm not very good with this technique, but I want to get better so i've been watching a lot of instructionals on it.

The main noticeable difference between Ryan's and Eddie's versions is the foot positioning. Eddie uses the lockdown control, where Ryan uses his foot to support the other by kicking his own heel to add to the roll (kinda like a calf crush finish) Ryan had some sort of justification on his dvd as to why he doesn't use the lockdown but I forget what it was exactly.

I dont go for the roll from half guard too often since I like being in top half. I'll do it from 3/4 mount, Bravo has an mts episode on this where he slows the roll down because your opponent really can't stop the roll from there and it ends up being a nice way to mentally dominate your opponent. And I tend to go for the truck rather than double hooks back take when my opponent is turtled. Guys don't expect it abs end up giving it up.

The way Ryan does it, you don't really risk getting your own back taken if you maintain the control properly. (Securing the dominant angle and locking the opponent in place with your free foot on the outside of his knee or hooking his instep.)

The way it is shown in Gambledub's post, however, would definitely involve such a risk. You need to have your own leg shallow, so as to avoid his leg controlling your leg above the knee, while you control his leg above the knee. It's essentially a fight for controlling the lever of the opponent's femur while denying him control of yours.

Of course, you can just hip escape after the roll as shown in the vid, but an opponent who is equally well versed in this position will already be taking your back, IMO.

In the vid you provided I have been stuck half way and get my back taken, I do the roll and then get stuck, so either I'm doing something wrong or it's just the risk it involves doing such roll.

Thanks!

Can you please explain more in detail or provide a vid so I won't risk getting my back taken.

Good info though!

Thanks!

Drill the position Ryan and Steph are in right here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjF6DV9QfJ0#t=12

Start from even, legs entangled, neither persons hips are off the mat. Both people are trying to control the other's hips and climb to the back. Start at about 25-30% intensity and gradually work up to full sparring. Restart whenever someone gets their back taken or you lose the position and wind up in a scramble.

recently added this to may game. takes a lot of work to end up in the right position. looks a lot easier than it is

Is that when you've mounted but your opponent has your ankle trapped? I went to a Rodrigo Gracie seminar and he was teaching how to roll to the back in that position. Identical to the one Hall shows at 5:45 of that video. My gym has been drilling that position like crazy

Yep. Just watched the Ryan Hall video, I like how he breaks down the mechanics of every movement.

based on the comments I thought this was about Samurai roll from 3/4 mount, watched the one vid though and that roll is different, which can lead to a knee compression, but both I haven\t found great against guys your weight. If you have about 30 lbs then yes for either of them.

Just in case guys actually interested in Truck position here is a vid I just threw together
