This is the new log branching off of "The Transformation of Caterpillars to Wolverines", mine and Easy Tiger's training log following our immense progress in strength training. We have officially transformed and reached the status of Wolverines, surpassing 2x BW Deadlifts and Squats steadily approaching that same mark.

As of the end of the year, our bodies had added mass amounts of weight. Gonads have grown, claws have developed, callouses have ripped, and iron has been moved. Our new bodies:

From a measly 161 lbs, Easy Tiger has lived up to the both halves of his name and is now:
5'8.25"
165 lbs.

From a rather chubby 162 pounds, I have grown to a... rather chubby 171 pounds:
5'5.25"
171 lbs.

Easy Tiger's most recent maxes yielded (IIRC):
Squat - 295
Deadlift - 355

My most recent maxes:
Squat - 285
Deadlift - 355

Easy Tiger and I have now transitioned our concentrated efforts from pure strength training to strength training, conditioning, and general improvement of our submission grappling skills.

I can attend my local no-gi submission grappling club 3 times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Joe (easy tiger) has a more liberal schedule and can attend more often.

We plan on logging most of our sessions on the mat, in the weight room, and general nonsense regarding ignorant shit. For instance, if I beat the shit out of a punk ***got or some ugly ass girl, it will be included in my next log.

This shit's going to rule.

We still plan on ripping ass in the weight room, be it farting while pulling 3+ plates or at parallel on a 300 pound Squat.

But because of our new goals, our routine has been reduced to two lifting days a week following this schedule:

Day 1
OH Squats 3x15
Squats 5x2
SLDL 3x3
Chins 2x5
OHP 3x4
COC 4x3 each hand
Pinches 3 x timed
Situps 2x5
Landmines 2x5

Day 2
Deadlift 5x2, alternating weekly with a not-so-heavy 3x6
OH Squat 3x15
BOR 3x4
Bench 4x4
Levers 2x2 each hand
Pinches 3x timed
Saxon Side Bends 4x2
Decline Situps 2x5

We love every movement in this workout with a passion, yet if only our colleges allowed O-Lifting... My god.

Our current competition schedule:

Jan 27 - Parkland, FL
CANCELLED BECAUSE MY BUDDY RENATO TAVARES IS UNREACHABLE.

Feb 11 - Lakeland, FL

Mar 24 - Miami, FL - NAGA - Florida

I plan on updating this with fancy ass colors and results.

Don't hope for great things, we don't. We expect them.

What CoC gripper level?

I can close the #1 with my right hand, but not left. I'm doing negatives with #2 on both hands.

Overcrushes or reps on #1 (Both hands) and Negatives/Holds on #2 (1.5 cm away or so)

Lifted yesterday. Numbers are written down. I'll post them once I find them. Trained tonight.

Drilled a guard pass. (Not new to me.) Knee under butt push off pass. Rolled for a while. That went well. Wrestled for a while. Practiced takedowns and sprawls. I need to work on my takedowns for this tourney.

Next post will be more elaborate. I'm fucking tired.

This is a multi-part log:

Jiu-Jitsu practice

Learned a few guard passes and subs from side control.

Rolled a bunch. I did pretty well for a newcomer to the sport. I can tell (and was told) that with submissions my top work will be solid. I need to learn more for guard. I was able to control the pace of the rolling, other than that I couldn't really submit people and I was caught a few times. It was good.

Learned a lot of strategy from guard.

Rolling today I almost subbed a 200+ pound high school wrestler with an armbar I learned last time. But then he picked me up like 5 feet in the air. Wasn't so tite.

I'm going to be lifting later today, will up it

Today I woke up and literally went straight to JJ. I had a rough night before, having been armbarred, kimura'd, and RNC'd by a bottle of tequila.

We warmed up and went in to doing stand up work, my first foray into the striking aspect of MMA. Yo this shit is fun. It's nowhere near as good as mat work to me, but it's tite.

After learning jabs, crosses, and multiple kicks, we did ground work. I rolled only 3 times, but I tapped the same guy 3 times. First time I got side control from the knees (using my unparalleled wrestling skills) and pulled an opposite side armbar.

Second time I gator rolled and choked for the tap. Third time I got to mount and the dewd was too tired to keep going.

I'm a fucking champ.

I felt things more and more, this stuff's starting to come together. I'm excited *****.

I got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time. My grappling is getting more and more fluid and the submissions I'm learning are becoming more and more natural.

May do Gi, No-Gi, and "Light" MMA this weekend. It's all the same price, so if I do it at all, I might as well do it all.

I lifted a few times. I'm fucking lazy though.

Anyways, went to grappling today. Learned some side control positioning and transitions to N/S, etc. Drilled that. Rolled for a while in the cage. Lastly, we did some wrestling takedowns and such. Worked on Thai clinch at the end with some of the guys. That's about it. My updates will start getting better when I'm not as drained after training.

+1 on the possible tourney this weekend. We have 2 scheduled in March since we can't make it to the GA one.

Today just rolled the whole time. Worked the heavy bag for a little bit. Finished the night off with some light MMA (Mostly ground and pound shit.)

I'll post a log of my lifting this weekend since tomorrow is off.

Don't feel like writing a full log, here is what i IMed joe:

... ok so i had two different dudes teach/roll with me 1 on 1...
... first guy
... he recognized that my wrestling was huge, and i should learn more subs from mount/side control since i tend to get it easy. where you normally go for an americana/kimura on opposite side.... he showed me a finish - bicep splice. we worked a lot with chicken wing/kimuras and i really picked up on where it can be applied and where it really works. we then moved on to leg subs
... ... while it's still on my mind - triaangle defense
... i learned that you can pick up to fake slam to improve your defense
... err position
... and how
... i also learned a good deal of set ups from guard
... err gward*
... for triangle and armbar
... and that a missed armbar transitions well into a triangle
... worked a bit on RNC - i know i'm going to do well with that position
... i actually showed him a few tricks - from when he has your back and gets high on your turtle grab his head
... ok so leg subs came because when he tried to triangle i picked him up, then he grabbed my leg and went str8 to a key lock on my ankle/foot.
... so i learned how to do both a knee bar and heel hook
... and rollign with him i caught him in it
... i just saw his leg up
... grabbed and dropped down and tapped him
... so i mean i'm starting to tap knowledgeable guys
... we rolled, i would tap him maybe 25 percetn of the time
... which is good ( i forgot his exp, but he was dece)
... forgot to ask*
... then i moved on to a different guy
... more of a traditional position oriented methodical brazilian type of style
... like he uses leverage and not sheer wrestling-type moves
... he helped me a shitload.
... on guard and sweeps
... we did this drill
... like broke it down to three cattegories
... where hes close in guard
... medium range guard
... and long range guard
... and sweeps from each
... long range he taught me to keep a knee on the chest and follow him around like that
... and how to sweep
... my catching his hand and a head and boom
... essentially it was the same for medium range
... but the knee goes down to his hip instead
... then for really close range guard
... hip out to the side
... and just stuff like that

I did pretty well today, I tapped this one kid who I couldn't do shit against 2 weeks ago. A bunch of times.

I'm getting a lot better. I can't wait for friday (exam reviews put me out wednesday).

Should be doing squat day today.

This week has sort of put my training in the dumpster.

I have 2 large exams that each are 1/3 my entire grade, so my life has been dedicated to those. First one is today at 2:00 pm, and then next tomorrow at 8:00 am. Between these exams and homework, my total sleep the past 2 days has amounted to 7~8 hours - nowhere near what I need/want.

And of course, I can't get in JJ today because I have the 5 pm lab. Friday I will be en route to Gainesville.

Joseph and I plan to do our Deadlift day this Saturday when I go down to Gainesville for the CroCop/SB weekend. Hopefully I can get more on track with training again.

Posted a bit late:

Lifting

Deadlift: 5x2 315 lbs
Easy. Good. I've never gone this high for doubles, so I was pleased.

OH Squat: 1x15 55 lbs, 1x8 55
Shit is tough. My body is in shambles from it.

Dynamic Rows: 3x5 135 lbs
First try, good exercise.

Saxon Side Bends: 2 x 2 per side 40 lbs
Shit is tight.

Joseph's workout from the same day:

He couldn't pull due to a proper fucked thumb.

Squats

OH Squats 2x15 55 lbs

Dynamic Rows 3x5 135 lbs

Saxon Side Bends 2 x 2 per side 45 lbs

I learned these things today:
Ezekiel Choke
Re-learned Heel Hook
Guillotine Defense (2 different methods)
Don't roll with people 80 pounds heavier than you

So I had a decent day at best today. I went against a guy today who's a lot better than me... And got wrecked. I'm still learning positioning and fighting bad habits from wrestling. I'm having trouble submitting people from side control, so I've been just working a shitload of keylocks from mount.

As a good benchmark, near the end I rolled with a guy who I always go pretty much even with and we were pretty even again.

Overall a good workout.

Pulled a muscle in my upper back...

Waiting for health before I train again.

Damn you guys are monsters.

Juan you really seem to be tearing it up on the mat. I remember it took me ages to start tapping people, and even now i'm still not submitting people as frequently as you seem to. Good work! how long have you two been training grappling for?

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm far from tearing it up. When I visited F2 in Gainesville I was getting destroyed.

I also wrestled in high school, so my positioning is better than most novices.

I'm also having trouble retaining everything I learn, but that will come with time I'm sure.

You'll be amazed how much faster you learn new techniques after a while. I remember struggling to memorize three to five techniques a night and not being able to do them well in sparring. Seems like so long ago now.

One of my main qualms with it is that my place is more of a club than a school.

We don't really drill things when we learn them. Once in a while the main fighters show a new technique, but that's about it. I just have to try to feel them out while rolling.
