Honestly it seems like adversity just makes this dude better. I'm on the fence on whether he'll beat Cain or not, but it should be an interesting fight.

Good to be back!!!

Werdum's secret is trolling. He is constantly trolling.

He feigned a TD against Hunto, Hunto goes for a sprawl and is met with a knee in the face.

Gets hit hard by Fedor, acts hurt, Fedor goes for the finish on the ground and ends up getting submitted.

Werdum is a smart guy. He recognizes that people in a cage fight will do certain predictable things in certain predictable scenarios, so he manipulates that to his favor.

The secret is to let guys get on your back.

Proof:

his improved striking. werdum is leagues better with his striking than back in the day - against AA he almost didn't have any. kudos to him for doing the work to round out his game.

or sometimes, in the case of fedor, the secret to werdum's success is someone leaping into his guard.

That fucking fight.... I started feeling uncomfortable when Werdum was walking out.

I think the secret to Werdum's success is that he's humble and by humble I mean he's willing to learn from anyone and he will seek people out to continually improve his entire skill set.

I think the same thing that prevents JDS from getting better as a fighter is the exact reason Werdum has gotten better.

I believe it's the work he's put into his striking game. His ground game has always been top notch, but he lacked, sometimes embarrassingly so, in the striking game.

That is no longer the case.

Not sure that he can handle the wrestling pressure game of Cain, but he's not going to be at any disadvantage in the striking.

Kings MMA has helped him put all the pieces together on top of an already solid grappling foundation. Rafael Cordeiro is the secret to his success. And RDA's success too.

Haha, honestly thinking back on that fight I thought he looked like he was walking to the gallows. Fedor still the GOAT, but testing that guard was just a bad call.

Werdum's kicking game is gonna play a big role in the fight though. If he gets taken down he's not gonna be bothered much. I'm thinking Cain will try to grind him out on the fence though.

His secret to succes? Let's see:

Mark Hunt is fat and old and still Werdum got afraid, knocked down and outstruck till he landed that knee on a stationary target.

Travis Browne only won 2 fights with illegal ellbows and got lucky and raped against Overreem.

Nogueira was also old and past his prime.

Defeating fat Nelson isn't an achievement and who the hell is Mike Russow.

So that's about his secret, fighting fat, old or just plain talentless guys to a title shot.
Lost to Overreem, Arlovski, JDS,
Ufc heavyweight roster is really bad.

That being said, I like Werdum, he's talented, funny and a cool dude. I hope he wins against Cain, but I don't see it happening.

Yeah I see the fight being in the clinch and even standing as well. Werdum is probably comfortable anywhere the fight takes place.

If Cain is smart he'll avoid the ground at all cost. Maybe he could nullify Werdum's guard, but it'd be playing with fire for sure.

it really was the height of arrogance. werdum is death on the ground and always has been.

and especially when fedor could have beaten him so easily standing up, there was just totally no need.

Hard work and dedication. And Jesus. He thanks that guy at the end of fights. I guess he is his Mexican boxing trainer?

This. Seemed like that fight really woke him up and made him realize that world class BJJ can only get you so far. Eventually you'll fight someone who is vastly superior on the feet who you can't get to the floor. Plus, having credible stand up creates a lot more opportunities to setup a takedown.

I'd say the same about RDA and that Jeremy Stephens fight. Nothing like getting KTFO by a badly telegraphed uppercut to make you realize that your stand up game must improve.

Good points. A solid striking game opens up ground game options the same way a serious take down threat opens up strikes (ala Weidman).
