his improved striking. werdum is leagues better with his striking than back in the day - against AA he almost didn't have any. kudos to him for doing the work to round out his game.
or sometimes, in the case of fedor, the secret to werdum's success is someone leaping into his guard.
That fucking fight.... I started feeling uncomfortable when Werdum was walking out.
I still re-read the PBP thread of this fight here sometimes. Man, that was epic.

Haha, honestly thinking back on that fight I thought he looked like he was walking to the gallows. Fedor still the GOAT, but testing that guard was just a bad call.
Werdum's kicking game is gonna play a big role in the fight though. If he gets taken down he's not gonna be bothered much. I'm thinking Cain will try to grind him out on the fence though.

Werdum's secret is trolling. He is constantly trolling.
He feigned a TD against Hunto, Hunto goes for a sprawl and is met with a knee in the face.
Gets hit hard by Fedor, acts hurt, Fedor goes for the finish on the ground and ends up getting submitted.
Werdum is a smart guy. He recognizes that people in a cage fight will do certain predictable things in certain predictable scenarios, so he manipulates that to his favor.
This. Seemed like that fight really woke him up and made him realize that world class BJJ can only get you so far. Eventually you'll fight someone who is vastly superior on the feet who you can't get to the floor. Plus, having credible stand up creates a lot more opportunities to setup a takedown.
I'd say the same about RDA and that Jeremy Stephens fight. Nothing like getting KTFO by a badly telegraphed uppercut to make you realize that your stand up game must improve.
