Props to Anthony Smith. He's now settled himself as a top contender with consecutive stoppages of Rashad, Shogun and now Oezdemir....two totally shopworn veterans and a guy who was fast tracked to a title shot against DC because there was no one else.

I'm a a fan of Smith, but he seems to have his limitations. He gets hit a lot, his chin is a little suspect, and most worryingly, he doesn't seem to have a gas tank. He was sucking HEAVY wind going into the third round when the pace wasn't even that high, and I wonder how the rest of that fight would of have played out had he not hit that TD that eventually led to the RNC. His last loss was to Santos who's also at LHW now, so maybe that's a rematch they can work with to decide who's next in line after Bones/Gus II.

But what a wreck the division is in: Smith is now #3, which seems fucking strange to say, but who else is there? Jan is on a 4 fight win streak, but against rather average comp, and he's proven to be somewhat of a gatekeeper with his hit and miss record over the years. Manuwa and Glover are done. DC obviously is never coming back to LHW and will sail off into the sunset after exposing BB and Brock (if that fight even happens).

The division rests entirely on Bones and Gus, who are head and shoulders above the rest of the top 10. I can't see Smith giving either of them any problems and like myself, even hardcore fans wouldn't be buying a PPV for Bones/Smith. Latifi is on a nice run, but he's 37 and his KO loss to Bader is still the last memorable thing fans associate with him. OSP hit his ceiling a while ago and it's never going higher.

LHW has been in tatters for years now, but how bad is it that a guy who went from undercards at MW to is now a title contender at LHW within 3 fights and only 1 top 5 win?

The UFC only got to where it is at now because of the LHW division - during the Couture, Liddell, Ortiz, Belfort, Griffin, Rampage, Wanderlei and Shogun era of 2004 - 2010 - but now the top 10 are rotating no-names and shopworn vets who shouldn't even be fighting.

I have a feeling Bones/Gus II is the last high-level interesting LHW title fight we will see in many moons, or at least the last interesting LHW title fight on paper until some new blood can rise himself tot he top.

Tf are you talking about, smith winning over volkan doesn't mean LHW is a bad devision , it just means that when anthony smith isn't cutting 30lbs of water he's THAT good. Deal with it, don't be hatin

It just shows how weak the LHW division is. We got Jones and Gus coming up, and Jones possibly going up to HW after this. No matter who Anthony Smith fights, Jones or Gus, there is no way he beats either of them. These guys are just on a whole other level than Smith.

I don't understand how many times this thread needs to be made for people to get it.

Heavier guys (200 lbs or more) have more popular / better paying sports to play, like basketball or football. Thus the most athletically gifted big guys are going to be steered towards those sports. What we have in MMA is pretty much whatever's left after that crop.

Since I'm behind the Anthony Smith train..I have to say, I disagree with you

Can we atleast juice them up with steroids like the Pride and PRE-USADA UFC days?

Anthony Smith just beat the last LHW title contender. That's a positive for the division.

Another one trying to shit on Anthony's win but yet another fail.

Except, there used to be more talent. Even in the days of PRIDE vs UFC.

The best LHW division we’ve seen was topped by Jones, DC and Rumble.

The deepest LHW division we’ve seen was topped by Shogun, Machida, Evans, Rampage, Liddell, Couture and Wanderlei.

Now we have this.

I’m not sold on a Smith. I like Reyes’ potential though.

It just goes to show how ridiculously good Jones, DC and Gus are. Let's not kid ourselves, in any other era they would have absolutely obliterated the LHW champs and looked invincible doing it.

It's always like this with you haters , before the fight they said he only beat old washed up men who shouldve retired 5 years ago. They said he can't beat a young guy like volkan and now that he did it apparently that means the entire LHW division is trash, anything to avoid giving the man his credit. He did it, give him his credit.

You're willing to dismiss an entire division not to give one man his due credit? Pathetic

Manuwa and Krylov are average competition? And Shogun and Rashad are not? Lol

Jan Blachowicz should be #2 in the division now (behind Gus), he had a much better/meaningful recent run than Volkan or Smith.

Shogun and Evans aren’t even average these days. The already plateaued in their fights against Jon Jones 7 years ago. I don’t know how anyone takes Smith seriously after those wins.

Dude, there is no conspiracy against Smith. We aren’t trashing the division just to hate solely on him. We are just being realistic and telling it how it obviously is.

These things ebb and flow; in a couple years we could be talking about how loaded lhw is.

Latifi is 35, not 37, and no sinal of slowing down. Jan's record is pretty good.
You're reaching a lot to make this argument, but go on. Logic isn't much of the standard around here.

Yup. Some people can’t except that and always have this philosophy of newer=better.

Take boxing for example. 70s HWs were the best talents. It fell off in the 80s, kicked back up in the 90s and has steadily declined since.

TS my friend,

you should learn how the rankings system works (if you beat number two guy, you are considered #2 or top 3),

you should accept that Volkan is top tier light heavyweight,

and you should now this was high pace fight with some hard clinching/wrestling where also many punches are thrown, no one gasses out from nowhere

I don't get it. Prior to today it was common consensus on Sherdog that LHW was trash and now Anthony's won the same people who said that have started vigorously defending the division from all criticism.
