"The series follows the adventures of title characters Ren, an emotionally unstable chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured, dimwitted cat. It premiered on August 11, 1991, as one of the original three Nicktoons, along with Rugrats and Doug.
Throughout its run, the show was controversial for its off-color humor, sexual innuendo, dark humor, adult jokes, and violence." via Wikipedia.
This shit was insane. To this day watching clips of this show is disturbing. Or maybe I'm just disturbed by the fact that I found it funny as a kid. What's especially hard to believe is that it ran on Nickelodeon of all channels. Later cartoons like Rocko's Modern Life and Spongbob Squarepants utilized similar comedic timing, but with heavily watered down content more in line with the sensibilities of it's young audience.
The show's creator John Kricfalusi was fired during the second season over a dispute concerning the episode "Man's Best Friend" where Ren violently beats an adoptive owner named George Liquor with an oar. Kricfalusi described George Liquor as "the greatest American" who is so conservative "that he thinks the Republicans are Commies"
Earlier this year Kricfalusi was accused by animators Robyn Byrd and Katie Rice of sexual abuse and underage grooming. The Buzzfeed article is pretty damning: https://www.buzzfeed.com/arianelang...sexual-abuse?utm_term=.aoNw7yvkrZ#.ch7WXD7Aq9
For what it's worth, season 3-5 were produced by Games Animation (Hey Arnold!) without Kricfalusi's involvement and contain many of the classic episodes and characters that exist in internet memes and gifs to this day. Who else watched this growing up?
