The Rear-Foot Elevated Split Squat

It's an interesting point. But when you do a BSS, you're not simply using one leg. You can't x2 and compare it to a conventional squat. The depth issue he mentions too is worth consideration.

I would fundamentally agree with the wider point that a back squat isn't a lower body exercise. But I thought that was established.

yeah i watched and only thing i got out of it was that...a squat is a full body exercise...he's right its not just a low body one. lmao

This reminds me of when Charles Poliquin convinced the world that Bulgarian weightlifters didn't squat, they only did step-ups, and he made a bunch of money writing about it.

Meh. I do BSS as unilateral work after back squats but there is no way I would replace back squats with them.

Someone also filmed Usain Bolt doing step-ups and claimed he didn't squat. Brought all ^^^ stuff back up again for a few weeks.

BSS are still a great assistance exercise.

Me too. And the problem is stability. With the rear foot elevated it's quite difficult to be stable, and kind of dodgy with heavy weights.

The depth issue can easily be resolved by raising the bench your back leg is on and standing the front leg on a block. This works easier with dumbbells though.

I think a better comparison would have been to use single leg squats standing on a high box (ie. a pistol where you don't need to keep your unloaded leg in front of you).

This is all you need to know, to understand Boyle's iconoclastic (revolutionary?) position on squatting --

"Special Release Price of Only $199"

Really though. When I saw that, it made me feel good about thinking he was an idiot beforehand.

Mike Boyle claims this should replace the conventional squat. I think he's crazy. What about you?

Death of Squatting

Mike Boyl is a skinny fuck who probably doesn't even lift weights. The whole point of squatting is to build the posterior chain. "Oh no the lower back is getting in the way of training my quads like a bodybuilder!" He is a good example of why most coaches are garbage.

I see his argument that most sports employ the legs unilaterally but there are also times athletes lift or push with both legs. Someone like a football lineman needs to be very good at it.

Does the RFESS build functional strength??
