John McCain is a complicated figure. No one can deny his heroism and that he stuck to his beliefs. Unfortunately, none of this will be his lasting legacy. His real impact on American politics is that he legitimized crazy when selecting the completely unqualified VP candidate of Sarah Palin. This was the start of insane right-wing politics being see as legitimate. An established republican selected a complete loonie for his VP pick just to try and gain votes from the extreme side of his party, the religious nuts. A desperate and terrible move for the country.

This may not have been the catalyst for Trumpisum but it certainly opened the gates to crazytown. I don’t believe we would have a wackjob like Trump as president if McCain didn’t select Palin.

Of all the things to hit McCain on.

I mean I might agree somewhat if he won. He lost, if anything that held the crazies back a while.

For me, this is the stain on him. He picked a completely unqualified candidate that is the prime example of the right-wing craziess we have running the government right now. By selecting someone like Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency legitimized her tactics and political views. I don;t believe trump would be President if McCain didn't start that ball rolling. It's been a long 8 years of momentum but it's what let loose the nuts we see today.

If you are going that route, Billy Bob Clinton deserves the blame.

Actually it was Obama's fault because he was too strong of a candidate.

If he were a weaker more submissive black man McCain wouldn't have needed that hail mary VP pick.

It was definitely a big step in moving towards extreme pandering to the lowest common denominator of the voting block.

That VP pick was not a Hail Mary pass. That was a fucking QB kneel when you are down on the scoreboard with 1 sec left on the game clock...

I have no beef with the MC. I think at the time of nominating Palin he has lost control of his campaign due to old age.
There should be an age restriction on who should be able to run for president. And all other politcal offices.
You shouldn't be able to run and win because you have been in the game for so long. Hillary Clinton is the prime example of that.
She should have never been the candidate. But was able to put herself in the position due to the influence established over years.

I don't see that as McCain's legacy, but interesting point being that Palin in the spotlight led to the acceptance of "characters" in the spotlight rather than just boring people who talked long and long and you realize they never do say anything

I'd always felt Arnold winning the cali governor was what sparked Trump, and others, to seeing that any famous enough person could pull a good chunk of votes despite no experience

The Lewinsky thing is what broke all the norms.

Someone should do a thread on the Bob Woodward book. I'm torn on Woodward, so I don't really want to do it. You should.

his anti UFC stance alone is enough to disbar him from ever being taken seriously, on any level whatsoever

I did too. I remember thinking how wrong it felt to have Arnold elected. He is also a despicable human being to top it off. Not much different than Trump where women are concerned but at least he is not bat shit crazy like Trump is.

I think you have a point, TS.

Steve Bannon has talked extensively about his crush on Sarah Palin and how seeing her inspired his ideas about "right wing populism."

@Hit-N-Run is a brilliant troll. This guy always makes funny posts. This is some of his best work yet, he's managed to blame Mcain for trump and take some of the heat off trump in the same process. And all because of Sarah palin. LOL
