The FEC Committee responsible for pushing forth a probe into the NRA and their ties with Russian assets has tied on party lines, resulting in the probe being scrapped. The two Republican members of the Commission decided to not allow it to go forth.
FEC Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub:
"For the Republican commissioners to apply [this] approach to a matter of such national importance, and in doing so turn a blind eye to the possibility that a foreign adversary secretly funneled tens of millions of dollars into a presidential campaign, is to bring their obstruction to a new and breathtakingly damaging level," she said in a statement.
Furthermore, the Vice-Chairwoman, Caroline C. Hunter, a Bush appointee, sees it differently:
"Once again, Chair Weintraub rejected the advice of the FEC's lawyers but blames her Republican colleagues. Her statement is long on conjecture and short on the evidence and the law. She relies on an 'article' [published by] McClatchy written by the same individuals who inaccurately reported Michael Cohen was in Prague in 2016. The FEC is forbidden from investigating groups purely based on rank speculation."
