We’re still in the early stages here, and the video didn’t offer much more than a few flashes of internals, but the company was nice enough to announce a few key specs, including eight CPU cores and six teraflops of GPU power, designed with 4K gaming in mind, referring to it as “the most powerful console ever created.” Microsoft made the big reveal in an attempt to get developers on-board – and, naturally, to add a little bang to today’s E3 kick-off event.

Xbox honcho Phil Spencer dropped the bomb as the show closed, teasing a console with 8 CPU cores, 320 GB per second of memory bandwidth and 6 teraflops of GPU power. By contrast, the PlayStation 4 boasts 1.84 teraflops, while the Xbox One has just 1.31. Industry bigwigs quoted in the reel called it “The most powerful graphics processor in a game console to date,” “The highest quality [uncompressed] pixels anyone’s seen” and “The ‘We heard you console.'”

Calling it a “monster,” Spencer says it’s meant to facilitate true 4K resolution gaming, high-fidelity virtual reality, and reassured that all future games will play on all three Xbox consoles. The company announced the Xbox One S, a slimline version of the original Xbox One earlier in the show.

Looks for it next year, and Spencer said Microsoft announced it today “to give developers and partners time to take advantage of the capability now.”

This is Basically Xbox 4 - Correct me if I'm wrong, but the difference in power between Scorpio and Xbox One is greater than Xbox One and the 360.

It will be interesting to see how game developers cater to both tiers of the system.

Would be if the operating system wasn't more important to those semantics.

I know the main goal is 4k but will games on this console perform better as well? I bought myself a ps4 and just bought my niece an xbox one. I feel like I flushed money down the toilet.

It will be interesting to see if Sony and Nintendo will upgrade their specs to best the Scorpion.

Really disappointed in this. The current xbone is barely able to run games at 1080p at 30fps with ones running 60 fps at 720p. Why they are focusing on 4k instead of focusing on a solid 60 fps at 1080p is mind boggling to me.

Also if you can play older xbone games they should take full advantage of allowing developers to patch the game and up the graphic fidelity and have it run at a higher frame rate. If I could play gta v at 60fps I would totally get the new console. Sadly though I don't think this will be the case. Hope I'm wrong and will wait to see what other info is released later on.

Why don't they try making some f#@/n games before trying to launch a whole new console.

"We want to talk about Scorpio now to give game developers the heads-up," Microsoft Studios general manager Shannon Loftis told us. "Games that are shipping now can do a couple of small things to give us a free upgrade when Scorpio comes out. If you implement dynamic scaling now, it will just look better on Scorpio. The other thing is to signal to all game developers that true 4K gaming is coming. Typically what happens is almost every game is created in natively 4K or better and then you downsample to fit the specs of the output device. There won't be any downsampling for Xbox Scorpio."

We asked about what happens when Xbox One games are only capable of sub-60 frame performance and whether Scorpio would be pinned to the lower spec in that regard. "Typically, yes. A good example is Killer Instinct, which is cross-play on PC and Xbox One. We have locked the frame rate to 60 frames per second," Loftis says. "We could do better on super high end PCs, but that ruins the competitive nature of it."

"We don't really think of games as 'Scorpio games' per se," she says. "We think of them as Xbox One games that may take advantage of the 4K rendering abilities of Scorpio. If you put a 4K game in a non-4K box it's going to render at 1080p. It will still look beautiful. Same with HDR. That will all work correctly."

Bleh, I was hoping it would be able to run upcoming titles at better frame rate/resolution than the current XB1. Locking it down to the lowest common denominator seems like a waste. Not a PC guy so not really moved by 4K gaming.

If it can run games at high frame rates at 4k and is reasonably price that would be terrific an no one should complain about that. I just doubt that they can deliver on those promises

Why patch the game when they can sell you GTA V remastered for $39.99.

The problem with this current generation of consoles isn't hardware, it's software.

The games themselves haven't been up to standard of previous generations. We're two and a half years in, and the supposed must-buy games for both consoles you can count on your fingers of one hand.

And most ironically, some of the best games have been remasters of the best games of previous generations.

1-3 Halo
The Last of Us
Tomb Raider
GTA5
Hell, even Skyrim is one of the most exciting releases for this year, and it's 5 years old.

Couldn't care less about the promises of more powerful hardware for the next generation. Give me shit to play now that would make me want to buy a fucking console.

Don't have a 4K tv, and one isn't even remotely on the horizon. I haven't been into an electronics store in a few years, so honestly I don't know if I've even seen a 4K tv in action. Is it noticeably better than 1080p? Can a human eye even detect the difference?

Don't worry, you can now play Minecraft with PC and Hololens users at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!

Something about how big the screen is and how far you are sitting from it

Yeah it's quite a bit nicer. Not SD to HD better but once there is enough content, it's worth the upgrade

Well the typical console peasant doesn't care about 60 fps and is satisfied with "silky smooth" 30 fps.
