For some reason I've been thinking lately about Hector Lombard's failed drug test. When it first happened, my reaction was similar to most people's opinion. Looking at Hector's incredible physique and the way he was tossing around fighters at Welterweight, it made sense that he was using PEDs. But after witnessing some of the UFC's recent behavior, it's become clear that a lot of sketchy dealing and foul play goes on behind the scenes. Things like the firing of Stitch for making neutral comments, the abandonment of Jon Jones after his accident, the favoritism shown to Conor over long reining champ Aldo, trying to shame Aldo into fighting injured, the blackballing of Wand, etc. The UFC's behavior as of late leaves me feeling as If this is a company that doesn't play by ethical standards when it wants a certain outcome. So how does this relate to Lombard? I have a sneaking suspicion that the UFC was looking for a way to get rid of Lombard so they could narrow the field of potential champions down to Hendricks, Lawler, Rory, and Condit. Once GSP retired there was a huge void left to fill, and the UFC probably viewed Lombard as an inadequate Heir to GSP's throne and favored those four guys instead. I believe two things are true: 1) Hector Lombard used PEDs. 2) The UFC guided him toward the use of PEDs so that he would be suspended long enough for the title picture to settle. You might think this all sounds too crazy to be true, but let me show you how it could have happened. When Lombard testified before the commission he gave an explanation as to how PEDs made their way into his system. He claimed that an old Olympic acquaintance offered him some pills that she said were legal and along the lines of vitamins. It turns out this woman lied because the pills contained substances that were banned by the commission. It didn't occur to me until recently that the woman might have been hired by the UFC. They knew that Hector would trust an old friend who was also an athlete. If this woman could use her personal friendship and athletic reputation to convince Hector to take a pill that unknowingly contained PEDs then the job could be done. And it worked! Robbie Lawler is the Champ and Hector Lombard is rotting away in suspension. Mission accomplished!
