The idiotic UFC matchmakers strike again with Romero/Costa.

Losing a fight in MMA isn't a big deal. You can build yourself up against quickly with just a couple wins. As opposed to boxing.

Also, sometimes you have to book the fights that are available timing-wise. It's not just about perfect match-ups. If you book 2 fighters that are climbing the ladder, people will say exactly the same thing "You're eliminating 1 of the contenders instead of having 2."

What's idiotic with a great fight? Ignore the rankings and just watch the fights. People are gonna have to take Ls in this and every other sport.

Well to be fair as Yoel missed weight for the 2nd fight even if it was 1-1 he wouldn't be the champion either.
Which also a bunch of BS as they pulled him off the scale with an hour to go.

Don't think so.

Romero is stuck in MW and should only have fights against good names. Borrachinha is one of them. Win or lose, Romero will be in the same position at MW or should move up.

If Borrachinha wins he flies up the ranks and we get a new contender and a title fight between two new generation guys. If he lose it won't set him back too much.

Plus it's two action figure guys who we all now will attract the masses. No homo.

Just bleed fight, but i agree, they both shouldnt fight, at least not yet, Costa is a promesing up and comer, while Romero is the absolute #1 contender, either doesnt need a loss on their record.

Move up to LHW then and fight Gus, Glover, or whoever, too early to derail Costa's hype train.

I don't see a problem with this match up...
Costa is a freaking truck and a Top10 guy...
Romero went 0-2 against the champ...

Looking forward to see this one...

Will it be a great fight? Perhaps.

That said, why the hell would you put one of your most exciting fighters, one of your best fighters, up against a guy like Paulo Costa who is just starting out?

You really trying to bury some great talent here? You want a young Paulo to walk through Romero and ruin his career? The dude is in his 40's, he should only be fighting elite, certified top 5 talent and if he fights anyone below that he should be given fights where he is going to blast through them without ending their hype.

If Romero wins, people will say "duhhh, they rushed Paulo blah blah blah".

If Costa wins, his stock goes up pretty steeply but you bury one of your best fighters.

Are they really giving up on Romero, who arguably is the best in the division!?

BS.
There's only room for one juicer at 185...loser goes clean

Firstly, +1 for the DB Cooper avatar, lol. Probably none of the millennials here get it.

Secondly, I agree with you about Costa losing. Middleweight needs contenders. Costa could be the next title challenger if Whitaker beats Gastelum, and the UFC should have him fight anyone but Romero. Eddie Bravo used to keep guys like Thiago Alvez away from guys like Jon Fitch until after they fought GSP for the title (they kept him away from Fitch during his win streak). The UFC should be keeping all 185 challengers away from Romero until they've faced Whittaker.

However, this fight makes sense for Romero. If he can't beat Costa, then his time is up. Romero also needs to prove he can make 185 consistently. He should need to win 1-2 fights, being on weight, before the UFC think about offering him another title shot.

The brass showcased their interest in Paulo as a potential superstar from Brazil. He has all the attributes to be one. Muscled, crowd pleasing style, doesn't pop(yet), has a pleasing face and doesn't talk too much stupid stuff. Yoel is damaged goods. See how Americans hate him and and through so much effort and so many elite victories that people are catching on to Yoel being a fighter they want to see. UFC did give him the titleshots he deserved, but he then shot himself in the foot, or just awful luck as always, and missed weight two times. He will need quite a few victories now before another crack.

Don't worry. People will see and respect Yoel for defeating Paulo, who isn't some unbeatable killer as people think. Paulo was avoided by most fighters and even a guy as Bomboze was able to get to the second round with him. Why? Because Paulo has a small reach and throws telegraphed hooks. Meanwhile Whittaker said he had a hard time trying to hit Yoel, and this is true to anyone fighting Yoel. He is patient and quick, he will always escape from being cornered against the cage and return landing straights against Paulo hooks.

According to Sherdog, all contenders/prospects should have separate roads to the belt that involve never fighting each other.

Romero has two losses to the current champion so they are giving Romero a lower ranked guy probably in the hopes that Costa wins and then boom, new title contender for the MW belt, if Costa loses then the UFC is right back where they were before the fight happened.

Yeah, I do think it's a big gamble as I see Romero as a favorite. Costa's defense is too poor.

But if you look up the rankings, it's time to put up some new blood in there. We have Jac, Romero, Rockhold, Weidman as their top 5 for years. None of them has a strong case for a title shot too.

This fight is for all the latent homos on Sherdog. If they couldn’t find a way to make it a three way fight with Rockhold, you’d hear the sherdoggers moaning all over the world.
