Check out this awe-inspiring smash pass counter sweep by Roleta. It's similar to a combination of the "turtle" sweep and an inverted guard sweep. I can't wait to try this one out, though it has a lot of details.

This is the perfect counter for that guy who has mastered the technical smash pass approach to the guard. Currently I like to either try to invert or go turtle if that happens, but this way you start the counter attack instantaneously. Screw side control!

Also I think the kneebar is sitting right there.

I can't believe I posted this super-awesome counter to the most fundamental bjj pass, and nobody cares ... I am dying to have someone try to pass my guard just so I can try this out.

You'll find that most awesome threads don't get the attention they deserve. I would know.

I'll definately try this. I'm getting bored with turtling if they pass my guard like this. BUMP this awesome thread.

the helicoptero lol, what next, el penetrado? "it will make sex look like a church!"

It does look like a good technique.

However, it seems as if the "uke" in this could release his right hand (nothing is holding it there as far as I can see), post that right hand, and circle to his own right to maintain somekind of top position status.

Dude, I love the technique, just trying to see holes. I don't know, if you use it in class let me know how it goes...

He can't circle to his right because his left hand is held with the cross grip and you have a hook coming up inbetween his legs ... also your hips are pushing his right arm forward. He can post with that right arm to keep from being swept to the right, but you are sweeping him the other way, towards his left arm.

Can't wait to try this out. Only thing is I rarely let anyone get this position on me, since I will usually pull open guard well before.

Thanks for the post. Seems a bit more complicated than most of us mere mortals are accustomed to.

I think the fact that the guy on the bottom has his right leg BETWEEN the top guy's legs is important to the sweep.

That being said, the dude on top SHOULD be gripping that exact same leg (at the thigh, kind of like in the pics) and pinning the bottom guy's knee down. I know that when I get in that position (i.e. going for the "smash" pass but the guy on bottom either opens up his guard a bit and/or I manage to get my left leg OVER his right leg, just like in the pics), I'll usually ditch the smash pass attempt, switch my base fast by twisting my hips and swinging my right leg back, and then twist the hips back to get side control. THAT'S where I find it CRITICAL to keep his right leg pinned down with my hand.

Let us know hot it worked if you tried it. I'm going to try to remember to try it at my next class, but I agree that there seem to be some critical details to remember.

I think you need to drill it a bit first to get it to work. The key is to rotate so that you get your hips into it and lift the guy off the ground and over you. Once you do that, he can't pin your leg down because he's already up in the air. That's why it looks like pulling forward on the cross grip is so crucial -- the hips go out, the arm is pulled forward, the hook comes up. All of it needs to work together.

I pledge to try this several times next time I roll, and report back.

it's a very good sweep form a position where u usually can't do shit.
i'll definetly gonna try it out,
