Most people on this list are around 40 years old and years past their prime...

With the extreme weightcutting (and now USADA), there are very few guys that can call themselves HWs. Most of them are now LHWs. DC was bigger than Stipe..

On paper it's still more exciting than the top of UFC's WW division.

How many times. Stupid rule changes.
Why does everyone LOVE cutting weight so much?
What was the weight "cap" on em, err Heavyweight division in PRIDE? Yeah. Hell, I mean there is SO MUCH cardio to burn in the UFC HW division with that 265 cap, that it would be criminal to abolish it and take the weight cut challenge out of at least 1 WC in the UFC!
Hunt did far better at 290 in PRIDE against arguably against better competition. Semmy Schilt WAS at one time a UFC fighter before having to go to PRIDE cause he was too big. Brock cuts massive weight, as did Ngannou.
Don't make the HW's cut, PLEASE. They will NEVER be lightweight movement. Pure power.

It’s going through a transition, got the 36+ remnants along w younger up and comers, missing a lot of middle ground. I think in 2-3 years it’ll have some of the same studs at the top who will be entering their primes:

Curtis
Beast
Volkov
Franny
Tai
Willis
Tybura

Newer guys:
Juan Adams (I’ve got him fighting for the belt in 2-3 years)
Whoever else they sign: Pav, Amir, Mayes

The simple fact that half of the relevant HWs nowadays are 40 years old ones from another era, 10 years away from their athletic prime and not much more evolved than they were a decade ago, just prove the UFC/MMA failed to renew its HW talent pool..
Yes, it's very bad, there is no other way to call it when your "next big thing" is a bar brawler who can't even get past Derrick Lewis

Pfft. There was a time when Wes Sims fought for the title...

LOL @ Lewis losing to Tank Abbott.

A lot of people have complained about the HW division being shallow over the years, but now it really is in awful shape. Derrick Lewis ranked #2 and turned in a performance in his last fight that would likely have made Dana White fire him if they weren't so desperate for Heavyweight fighters. People like to talk about how MMA fighters have advanced in technique so much sine The UFC began, but honestly, if Derrick Lewis had to fight a man exactly the same as Tank Abbott was in his prime, Lewis would lose. I'm not even sure if Tank has a winning record in The UFC but when he was in shape and having a good night, he was a threat to any man on the planet wanting to fight.
No time period has yet to surpass how terrible the UFC's Heavyweight division was between 2002 to 2007.

I think they intend to "try" to save the division with this guy...

Derrick Lewis holds that place because the cards fell juuuuust right. Think of the sequence that led to it — his #1 ranked opponent coming down with PTSD, said opponent having achieved his high ranking initially due to his original matchup with a strong-chinned fighter falling through due to the sloppiness of Brazilian pharmacies, whereupon a higher-ranked, supremely talented but very chinny fighter thought it would be a good idea to call him out just in case Dana was so gaga over the new guy that he'd giftwrap him a title shot.

Mind you, those are all very heavyweight things to happen...but all of them happening in a row like that? Vegas would give better odds for CM Punk KOing DC. It's not quite fair to make that the centerpiece of your argument that HW as a whole is currently at maximum suckage.

TS, I just disagree with you.

other posters have made good arguments to support this

Yup. The problem with a truly stacked division is parity -- lots of dangerous contenders that can win fights, but which muddy up the rankings. People seem to think a "strong" division is one with a few dominant fighters, but that's not necessarily the case.
