There's been increasingly many OT threads or OT discussions within normal threads lately. In addition to that, it's pretty obvious S&P+C is still undergoing a transformation. I think a common place for general S&P+C and loosely-related discussion can be useful. This doesn't need to be in the main page and it doesn't need to be stickied.

    Welcome to the gentlemen's club:

That "teh internet and us" thread would make for an interesting discussion.

The internet is turning into the collective sum of the fast-growing human knowledge. Critical thinking and plain "internet searching skills" are every bit as important today as memorizing information has ever been in the past.

When it comes to the level of knowledge and expertise that can be found in specialized internet forums, I think this interesting presentation might be relevant:

I will be posting in here often.

    On teh internet and us:

While lots of great information may be out there, it has only been out there for a very short time. Think about it: this forum has only even been in existence for, what, 8 yeas? 9 years? Much too short of a time for the average joe to have found a place like this. Also, it is unlikely that the vast majority of people over about 45 will EVER find a place like this. People that age and especially older, i.e. 50 or 60, 1. Don't have great internet/computer skills and 2. Usually don't give a shit about anything discussed in this forum. Plus people as a whole are inclined to avoid physical exertion, which doesn't bode well for things like heavy squats and deadlifts to ever really proliferate in the average health club of today.

Don't feel like making a new thread for this - I haven't done bjj for almost a year, but I'm just wondering, is being explosive that important in it? I would expect static strength more important. I mean theoretically what would be harder - grappling someone who deadlifts 700 and only power cleans 275, or grappling someone who power cleans 350 and only deadlifts 550. I mean of course it matters on the style of grappling etc., so I'm talking about a normal way of grappling, keeping the moves basic.

I would think that static strength would be more important. There is a lot of grinding, slow movement involved in bjj.

In my opinion, you can have a more grinding, slow style from top position, but when you're trying to escape from a bad position, or sweep an opponent from the bottom, explosive strength, quickness & timing are crucial.

And, btw, thanks for the strippers :)

I don't think that's a downside to specialty forums like this one. On the contrary, I think that the exclusion of non-interested people (who, when it comes to S&C are obviously the vast majority of the population) is conductive to a higher level of "info processing" and "idea generation".

The key point to someone looking for info is: A) the ability and proficiency to use the internet and search engines effectively, and B) the critical ability to discern the bs from the valuable info out there.

Thanks for the pics, btw. I hope Ronin is less disappointed now.

I definitely don't think that is a downside. The original thread was about how people outside this forum don't share the same ideas about training as a lot of people in here do.

Stupid fight's on at 3 in the morning!

If I'm not passed out in a gutter by then, I might just tune in... should be a good one though.

Good modding to a degree though.
