Its that time of year again already, Geoff Keighley and his game awards.

Looking like its gonna be a packed show this year. with loads of game being shown/revealed.

Also an episode of the podcast for the awards dropped yesterday (inside the game awards)

Few points from that:

  • "This year's lineup is going to be… pretty good, I think we get a lot of the… 2023 and beyond games that will be announced and next year is going to be pretty big for games, so I think we got some big stuff"
  • "This year was lighter for releases because of the pandemic, but I think next year will be very busy, and that will be reflected in the show as we have a lot of announcements for next year and beyond"
  • "We will have good updates on some existing (as in already announced) games that are known but people wanna see more gameplay or content"

  • "More than half the show will be brand new game announcements"
  • A headline that will come out of the show is how before we just scratched the surface of next gen games, but now there will be the conversation of how much could be done with this generation with some of the games that are shown, points out that he knows for sure at least 2 next generation games that he saw will really trigger that conversation
Some of those trailers will be early in the show and some late

  • The first couple of trailers are "surprises that will make people excited"
  • Some of the games in this year's show were supposed to be revealed as far back as last TGA
  • Going to have announcements for some games that are 3 or 4 years out for hiring

  • Geoff also notes that there will still be games that he knows for sure some people will say "wait why wasn't this game there"
  • However despite possibly having people surprised at the lack of certain games, he also notes from his experience as a show producer that "As long as you have 2 or 3 really good things the internet forgives you"
  • The production team is asking developers about almost any game people ask them to show, even if the developer is unlikely to be making it at all for the off chance that they do
  • Geoff is usually very involved with most of the trailers he gets, often around a year out, and this helps them set up the show properly

  • On the topic of CGI trailers, Geoff says he is surprised at how many are still relying on CG trailers that are not representative of the final game, and notes that there should be around the same amount this year as previously.
  • At the same time he says that he also says that "when you look at some of the stuff like Forza or some of the stuff that PlayStation is doing that is as good or better than CG trailers"
  • He repeated multiple times that the team is constatnly working to find the balance between gameplay, trailer and CGI footage for the show.

  • Thanks to the live format they can be theatrical again, and they will use the live orchestra as part of some of the trailers.
  • Last point that stood out to me, and this goes back to the CGI/not real time footage concerns, is that Geoff specifically disucssed Hellblade 2's reveal, and how people did not believe the footage would be representative, is it CGI or real time rendered and so on, and says how the next time it will be shown there are bound to be the comparisons of how does the new footage stacks up to the original one, is it improved or downgraded and so on.
The way he went on about that part of the conversation makes me believe that Hellblade 2 will have a trailer or even possibly gameplay at the show, but I am mostly speculating on that point.

For those that choose to spend 12 minutes or over paying attention to this farce of a 'video game awards' show, you owe it to yourself to first watch this video exposing exactly how obvious of a farce it is.

Cliffs -
*Its a show that is funded by publishers in which it gives awards to themselves, and with the added benefit of showing off trailers for its new games coming out.
*The influence of gamers voting is only 10% on the overall results (supposedly), with the totals of the 90% insider-votes and the 10% gamers vote are never disclosed publically. With 5 nominees in each category that 10% influence gamers have is ultimately irrelevant in most awards.

I only watch for the reveals.

Looking forward to mouthbreathers whining about trailers for games that won't be out for a few years because they can't wrap their stunted minds around that studios also use these trailers for recruitment.

Fingers crossed Cyberpunk wins at least one award because the internet meltdowns will be glorious.

Does he have a merch store? Patreon link? Does he ask me to like and subscribe to support the channel? Still not gonna watch it.

Imagine being an adult and worried about the legitimacy of a games awards show, hell any awards show tied to corporate products. Truly dark times we live in.

I only watch for the reveals.

Yes, watch them on the Game Awards, because they will never be uploaded onto YouTube, Twitter, or every other possible online video streaming site.

The orchestra medley right before they announce the GOTY winner is usually pretty good.

But other than that, yeah, I only watch it for the reveals.

Basically every award show ever, from the Grammys to the Oscars....

Its nothing new. Ill take the trailers though.

Which award? Its literally outshone in every area by multiple games.

I don't 'worry,' because I usually play games years after they come out, for cheap.

For those what want to ignore the obvious and be excited for a rigged awards show, with the awards given to publishers and by publishers to generate sales of the awarded titles, go right ahead.

Its like REALLY wanting your favorite face wrestler to win against the heel wrestler, and not knowing both wrestlers already know who is gonna win and it was decided by some guy behind the curtain.

Fan Choice Awards are the most legitimate, though that's a flawed system because how many fans actually watched/played/listened to every Movie/TVseries/Game/Album in each category?

Or did they just watch/play/listened to one or two throughout the year and decided they were awesome so they voted for them in each category while having no idea what the other options actually were?

I don’t usually get excited for this type of stuff these days. Mostly only care about reveals and updates, and even then I will just find a “everything revealed at….” article and just catch the highlights. Even with the reveals I probably won’t watch the trailer unless I know there is gameplay in it, which often doesn’t happen with an early reveal.

Lol nah, it hasn't. I think they're nominated for OST and RPG. By all means, tell me how it fails in either of those categories and isn't worthy of an award.

Ah, I should have been more specific. I didn't mean you, I was talking about the Youtuber.

Do people really give a shit, though? I don't see anybody citing "The Game Awards" as any mark of quality, or having debates over what games should have won, or anything.

I think most are in the know that this is one big promotional event, that has some awards thrown in. Without Googling, I doubt anyone could tell you who has taken home these very prestigious awards over the years. That pretty much goes for all game awards. Unlike other mediums, I don't think the gaming community as a whole gives one single solitary fuck about awards.

You said win an award...

As an RPG.....I dont even have to say why it fails as an RPG. Anyone with a brain knows that. Its ass. I havent played the other nominees but ToA, Monster Hunter and SMTV are far more critically acclaimed and seem to be more acclaimed within the rpg space.

LMAO. It will never win an OST when its nominated against games with God Tier OSTs like Nier. Outside of 'Never Fade Away', I couldnt tell you one interesting piece of music from that game. Its mediocre.

Yes! Thank you. I feel like I have to go over this every year. This is the glamor/money aka 'bought and paid for' vote.
Each is the most prestigious award within its field for different reasons:
  1. DICE = most prestigious ceremony of all; the Academy Awards of video games (Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences). Votes are by all those working at different levels of the industry. Here is the industry vote.
  2. GDC = a subset of the above-- the largest vote of actual developers of video games; i.e. the people who make the games, and know better than anyone what engineering greatness is. Here is the programmer/artist vote.
  3. Game Awards = the most viewed and most commercially successful of all videogame awards. Here is the glamor/money vote.
  4. Golden Joystick = the longest running active GOTY award, and based on the largest poll of gamers worldwide. Here is the gamer/popularity vote.
  5. Giant Bomb = representative of the gaming press; the most trusted source due to the reputation of its founder, Jeff Gerstmann, for integrity. They aren't taking money. Hardcore gaming outfit. Has all the cred outlets like IGN can't buy. Here is the press/critic vote.

Ah, I should have been more specific. I didn't mean you, I was talking about the Youtuber.
He's a YouTuber that covers Games, Tech, and occasionally social issues.

Just watch it. He posts receipts backing up everything he says.

I don't think I've ever watched this because the real awards are handed out by DICE.
