"jiu-jitsu is losing relevance in modern MMA" -Alexander Volkov

"Alexander Volkov knows Fabricio Werdum’s submissions are his main threat, but he also thinks the “the gentle art” is losing its applicability in modern day MMA."

Volkov ended up beating Fabricio Werdum in the 4th

another case:

Fedor's last submission win was in 2008 up to that point he had (29) wins (14) by submission.
from 2009-2019 he fought 14 times (9-5) 7 wins by KO, 2 by decision, and 0 by submission

Could Prime Fedor pull the same submissions against modern MMA competition?

There used to be wider gaps between skills levels... nowadays you have to be a legit top grappler to really dominate there.

fedor in 6-5 in fights overseen by a commission. What does that tell you...

Anyway Fedor would probably Be top 15 but definitely not a champ. JDS,DC,Cain, Nganou and Werdum all beat him.

Everyone learns as much BJJ as possible, and everyone's sub defense is getting better.
With that, BJJ is not only about submissions, it's about positioning, guard work, even work from top. All wrestlers learn in wrestling is takedowns. NCAA trainer doesn't know how to pass guard.

Plus, good old RNC of an exhausted, beaten opponent that exposes his back trying to escape fists will mostly work.

I feel like Fedor wasn't that elite of a grappler but he was simply ahead of his opponents at the time
the same way when Khabib transitioned from sambo to MMA he was submitting everybody with triangles and armbars

maybe grown men shouldn't be so submissive and learn to throw fist. plenty enough women and children enrolled in BJJ classes to keep it in business.

Jiu-Jitsu is definitely not losing relevance, it's just that everybody is practicing it nowadays, it's become a basic part of MMA training which means that you would have to be a high-level grappler to be able to pull off a submission because now everybody has some basic submission defense.

<WellThere>

In BJJ it is easier to defend than to attack... mix that in with punching someone in the face and there we go.

There used to be wider gaps between skills levels... nowadays you have to be a legit top grappler to really dominate there.

That said it still works on basically anyone not training MMA fulltime.

Seems like all we see is rnc's anymore.. Killa B bless.

Well, I'm sure prime Fedor could sub guys like Derrick Lewis and Tuivasa, but is he armbarring a fresh Cormier from guard like he did to HMC and Coleman?

Hell no.

Submitting Coleman in 2004>>>> submitting Derrick Lewis in 2019.

you forget he beat all the UFC HW champs who are the same age and were champs in UFC when he was in pride
and he beat them under commission supervision FYI, sorry to bust your bubble
it's like saying bj penn was never good because he loses now at 40+.
also submission defense is part of BJJ

BJJ in MMA today is largely like a college degree is for white-collar work (or at least perceived to be, not defending the idiotic system but perception is reality sometimes):

If you "have it" (at least defensively), you probably aren't going to get very far ahead simply on the back of it.

But if you don't have it, a lot of doors are going to be automatically closed off to you.
