The Dread Pirate Roberts arrested; The Silk Road shut down

Dude's a boss, but you're bound to be caught eventually. I think I would have left the country and disappeared after the first $50mil. If all these trails were out there, it's surprising it took them this long to put 2 and 2 together and catch him.

how was he cutting in the cartel's business? if anything, i would think he just opened up a new market to increase sales for the cartels...

I'm not a history expert or anything, but I've read from various sources that the U.S. government/military basically peddles narcotics in other countries. Not sure if these sources were credible, but if true, will the U.S. government prosecute itself?

Go figure...

This is why you're not a history expert.

Didn't one guy threaten to release the names of all the users?

How can people not know by now that "hitmen" are all undercover cops.

The guy who was going to be killed was the guy who threatened to release the names...

This is the first I've ever heard of the whole thing though. Who knew I could have been buying guns online this whole time?

you could also have people write essays for you

I'd do this now if the site was still up. lol (as far as I'd do it for people, not pay to have them written). Something to make up for the three degrees I don't use and the student loan debt piled to the ceiling.

It was bound to happen. Once that exploit in TOR was found sites were shutting down and people were getting arrested left and right.

Meh. There was no child porn or hired killers on SR. Even weapons weren't allowed.
Anyone who says otherwise never even checked it out to see.

It was mostly drugs, media collections (books, porn, coupons), gambling and some other random shit.

Edit: If you're talking about other dark web sites then ignore my post. I just mentioned it because some people would make such claims about SR as a way to put a black mark upon it.

There used to be some guns for sale, although by the time you came around they may have banned them.

So is the Kazaa of Silk Roads going to pop up soon?

So the guy manages to start an anonymous site where you can buy drugs and order hitmen but then uses his own name in an email address? DERP...

does that not strike anyone else as fishier than nuoc mam?

i say the real dread pirate roberts made enough dough and wanted out of the business. framed this poor mother fucker, took a small portion of the total profits and jumped ship.

now that would make a good movie.

super interesting.

its so odd that the guy would get caught in such a dumb way. its also super weird they haven't caught him until now. some of it makes it seem fake/set up but who knows...

This is actually a decent idea. You better finish the script and sell it, before it gets stolen.

P.S. First time I seen someone reference nuoc mam on this site. Good shit man. Whenever I go for Vietnamese, I put that stuff on everything.

Speaking of "Silk Road," the price on bitcoins was jumping up fast.

How he got caught:

An agent involved in the investigation ("Agent-1"), found the first few references to SR on the internet from somebody only identified as "altoid", attempting to promote the site in its beginning days, in January of 2011. In October of the same year, a user also going by the name of "altoid" made a posting on Bitcoin

Talk titled "a venture backed Bitcoin startup company", which directed interested users to "rossulbricht at gmail dot com". That email address is what led to DPR's downfall.
---
After identifying "altoid", they started connecting the "DPR" identity to Ulbricht pretty quickly.
Ulbricht's Google+ page and YouTube profile both make multiple references to the a website dubbed the "Mises Institute". DPR's signature on the SR forums contained a link to the Mises Institute.
DPR cited the "Austrian Economic theory" along with the works of Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard, all of which are closesly associated with the Mises Institute.
Server logs show that someone logged onto the SR administration panel from San Fransisco around the same time that Ulbricht was staying in San Fransisco.

Multiple fake IDs were intercepted by U.S. Customs & Border Patrol while on their way to an address which Ulbricht was living at the time. These IDs all carried photos of Ulbricht but had false names and details. This was around the same time that DPR stated in a message that he was acquiring some fake IDs to buy new servers.

When questioned by Homeland Security about the fake IDs, he refused to answer any questions but then stated that anyone could purchase such things using "Silk Road" and "Tor".

The address which Ulbricht was staying at was being rented in cash and he was living with housemates who knew him under a name which corresponded with one of the fake IDs.

He posted on StackOverflow using his real name, inquiring about how to use curl/PHP to grab things off Tor, before quickly changing the name to "frosty" (with a fake email: [email protected])

I got a mate who will be pissed, he loved that place.

It didn't have anything to do with TOR exploits. DPR just wasn't careful enough with hiding his identity.
