So ive been watching a lot of boxing nowadays and ive noticed that Chad Dawson occassionally likes to throw a jab followed by two left hooks. Obviously one would be compelled to...attempt.. to add such a beautiful combination to his arsenal just because of the sheer aesthetic value of it (:icon_chee).

While im not expecting my hand speed to be any where near that of Dawsons, i find that the main problem im having is the delay between the first and the second hook, whereby i think i need to wind my body back so that i get the proper rotation for the second punch? Is it supposed to be done with the rotation and everything?

Btw, i would ask my trainer, but hes more stressed about my foot-work/movement than my combinations (im new). I probably shouldnt be worrying about this, but hey, it looks cool :icon_chee

The delay is a good thing. But with more practice you can make it a very smooth motion. Not all punches have to chain directly together, you don't set very good traps like that and can become predictable. If you can hook off the jab that's great, but if your man knows that he's going to be looking for it, so if you can hook off the jab, then hook again unexpectedly, it might land.

Well if this is a combo you are just trying out and trying to ingrain into your muscle memory, it will be slow especially that you are throwing off the same hand two times in a row. It will flow the more you do it. When your throw your first hook off the jab, make sure that your turn your hips and torso when you want to comeback and throw it again. Your arm will automatically follow back and you will be prepared to throw the hook again. Repetition is key mastering anything physical. Just keep at it bud.

Yeah, that is a pretty cool combo. Any of the slightly older guys on here remember watching Meldrick Taylor throw triple, and even quadruple, hooks against guys like Julio Cesar Chavez? Now, that was amazing to see! Not often do you get to see fighters do stuff like that, much less against true quality opposition.

I like to take a little power off the first so that the second --more powerful-- hook comes off quicker. Like the others have mentioned, be sure to allow your body to turn back into hook position --with your shoulders at least squared up and your back heel off the floor -- between the first and second hook.

Another one of my favourites is to throw the second hook to the body (in that case I turn it up like a 1/2 hook,1/2 uppercut and dig into the floating rib area) instead of the head. You can also reverse the combo by throwing a quick body shot, then hook the head.

also to add the combo doesn't have to be a knockout combo... sometimes things are done to get guys off you

Same hand throws are good to mix with feints.. If you throw say a jab, cross or just jab and then surprise him with a jab, feint right, lead hook. Obviously there's a risk of opening yourself up from a counter right hand but if you make sure to set it up and find an opening then it can work.
