Just look at how Big John is positioned and closely looking at Paige to see the exact moment when she might go out, he instantly recognizes it and steps in.

Now look at this goof, who is way far from the fighters so he can`t really see Munoz eyes and body behavior (like it was that difficult to see if he was out cold but oh well) and even when steps in to check on him takes a few moments to see if he was really out.

This is why Big John is a fantastic ref and along side that british dude the best in the business.

Great post TS, and great footage.

There was an awful referee last night as well who was literally waving over an unconscious guy, and not even trying to get in between the action.

Some of these referees should lose their jobs immediately with the careless treatment of athletes' health.

    Look at this shit...

Big John is a good referee when he isn't landing sliding knees on fighters.

It was hard to see him going out i will give him that but it still bad judging on the ref because look at how he is positioned, those refs are so fucking careless about it. Then he steps in like "Oh ok he is out..."

Big John was an absolute shit referee in the first few UFCs. Check them out for yourself, its amazing he didn't get someone killed.

He still does some stupid shit, like the fight where Big Country felt the need to kick him afterwards because of his failure to stop it immediately when Bigfoot was clearly fucked up. I think he's an above average ref, but smh when people hold him up as the gold standard.

Page was facing upward, Munoz was facing downward and obstructed by his own arn. Not really the same in terms of visibility.

Who is the gold standard if John isn't?

The Bigfoot stoppage was fine to me, Roy was being a prick as per usual.

Every ref has his mistakes, especially in a 20 year old career. But Big John is overrall a great ref, who understands all aspects of it and helped and still helps this sport grow.

My grandma is half blind and she could see that Munoz was out cold, are you kidding me lol that shit has horrible and his position was shit, he should have been closely to them like in the final part of the gif the whole time.

On a serious note...Big John had pretty much zero power in them first few shows, he eventually refused to do anymore unless they gave him the power to stop the fights

Keith Peterson, Jason Herzog, Marc Goddard. Some of the younger guys need to get their due. I don't see these guys fucking up as often as Herb and John do.

There were different rules back then. It was unregulated and They pretty much let guys go until they couldn't go anymore. Like until knockout.

He screwed Sakuraba over in his first UFC fight too. Thought he was KO'd just when he was going for a takedown iiirc.

Herb Dean was another one who was worse much longer than Big John. Herb was hated online in the early days.

Marc Goddard is the best IMO. Only mistake i ever saw him make was the late stoppage in the Mike Perry KO over Danny Roberts.

True, but those three have reffed a shitload of fights by now. Yet people still act like they're noobs. I bet they've done more televised fights by now than Big John or Herb or any of the Old Guard had done circa 2010. John and Herb are sort of like the Founding Fathers of America. They're Great, but mostly because they were there first.

But have you actually watched these fights recently? There are times when it seems like Big John is not even paying attention. He comes off as literally retarded numerous times.

He wasn't given much power back then. He was still learning in the fly what this no holds barred stuff was about. It was brutal at times.
