Business wise this is the best possible move. Conor's whole persona is based on talking smack and performing and talking like he's invincible. The only way to EVER restore this is by murdering the man who outclassed him in theyre previous bout.

Even if he would rematch and decimated Aldo. Took Frankies head clean off in the opening round the Nate loss will always overshadow him.

It's a big risk. But it's all or nothing for his image. If he fails again he can always go defend his belt. But never will have this invincible Aura around him that the fans love so much.

Why would a second loss restore his image?

El tapo will tap again....

His image is fine, his ego is damaged. It's also the only way to generate the biggest PPV #s. If he chose to defend his belt and won there would be no issue. His loss would be swept under the rug as a failed attempt to move up in weight and face a top dude, however that's not McGregor's role in his mind.

It is, but unfortunately he really doesn't have any other tools to deal with Nate.

Ok let's say he wins the rematch. He still lost to Nate, so they're 1-1. The only way to truly restore his image would be a third and final rematch.

This rematch makes no sense. There is a FW title that needs to be defended. Conor has already lost to Nate once, and it wasn't even close. There was no controversy. Let them rematch later down the road, not back to back and when Conor is holding up a division

No shame in losing to a much bigger man. Even GSP at his peak wasn't invincible... he was just invincible at 170lbs.

True, but even showing that he is capable of beating someone in a bigger division would restore at least some of his image and would help him.

It's called hedging your bets.

If he loses they still have the built-in excuse of 'jumping two weight classes', and the UFC can still make a fight at 155. Plus he still has gold over his shoulder with the 145 belt which makes all of this 'justified' in the casual's mind. Even if the UFC wanted to book this rematch, why at 170? If anything it should be at 155, but of course they don't want to tarnish Conor's future selling power at 155. Another loss at 170 can be easily excused just like they did the first time.

If he were to take a 145 fight and lose to Edgar or Aldo, his stock plummets dramatically, and he has no belt, making potential 'superfights' or gifted title shots @ 155 seem ridiculous.

It's a cash grab by the UFC, and a no lose situation for both them and Conor. If he loses we will here the same 'once in a lifetime' bullshit about how he is a 145er who 'jumps two weight classes' etc, and they will say that maybe 170 was too much, let's give him a shot at RDA.

His image is shit, we got such great new nicknames for him now, cuz of one Diaz fight, what happens with a second?

McTapper
McFlinch
McBitch

*edit*
Dada McGregor
Conor 5000
El Tappo
McSlapped

any more?

Any good win will restore his image, but I'm not certain this fight will result in a good win for him.

I agree somewhat, however, if he loses to Nate again he'll be forced to work his way up again if he plans to move to 155 still. He really should be defending his title and the UFC are taking a risk with this rematch but if Mcgregor wins it will be a profitable move.

I think some fans think a little too hard. that fight didn't hurt conors image in my eyes. he fought a short notice opponent 2 weight classes higher than his last fight. someone way bigger than him.

His "image" as far as im concerned is a true fighter who will fight anyone at any time with any amount of notice. 196 solidified that image. win or lose.

He never had an invincible aura to begin with as he'd already been finished before the Nate fight.

Invincible aura is what Jones has. It's what Fedor had for 10 years.

i hate this rematch and i think his image gets worse as he fails to defend the belt, holds up a division, and fights a pointless fight that does nothing for rankings.
