Michael Goodwin: Mr. Obama, it's time to face reality, Mr. Trump is going to be president

So this is how it ends — in a whimper wrapped in self-pity and recriminations. With President Obama on the defensive at his final press conference and Hillary Clinton’s last campaign event resembling a wake, the Democratic Party is limping off the stage and into the political winter.

It was supposed to sit atop the national power pyramid for decades, a new paradigm of liberals, progressives, the young, the old, the unions and blacks, Latinos, Muslims and Asians.

The torch would be passed from Obama to Clinton, a liberal Supreme Court would vastly expand executive power and the regulatory state would enforce climate-change orthodoxy on all industry and elitist dictates on every American. Globalism would be the new patriotism.

But a funny thing happened on the way to one-party dominance: The people who work for a living said no, hell no. Their revolt brings Donald Trump to the White House amid hopes of a revival of the economy and of the American spirit.

Time to go Obama. You're out of the White House in a matter of days, stop pulling strings and dividing our citizens and our allies even more. Obama has shown, with his recent actions, he is definitely the divider in chief and a liar.

He could do what is right, and ride off into the sunset, as the people have shown that is what they want by this huge Trump win, or he could do what's wrong and sabotage the next administration as much as he can. Guess which road he took? You're right, sabotage.

This bum life president can't get out of office soon enough.

Remember, the republicans are in the same position that the democrats were in 2008. Everyone thought that Republicans were dead. If the Right doesn't crush the democrats now while they are down. Democrats will begin to reclaim power again in 2-4 years. Crush them now when you have the chance.

Yeh I'm a big trump supporter but I'm almost certain the right will squander this opportunity. ..Republicans in Congress are almost as bad as the filthy liberals. ...ALMOST

Y'all are kind of overstating pretty much everything.
It feels good to win, but don't get too big for your britches, if that's still possible

As a matter of fact, Republican party of 2008 and 2012 IS dead. This is not the same party- yes, it's still fleeced with globalist/neo-con insiders, but they can't push their usual strategy with Trump at the helm.

I have equal disdain for McCains, Romneys, Paul Ryans, as I do for Clinton/Obama heathens.

The only way this happens is the democrats do more stupid shit to move to the left even more.

And the republicans actually do something while they have the chance.

They'll almost certainly repeal Obamacare (not sure what the replacement looks like) and they'll cut taxes (mostly for the rich, but middle class will also get some benefit).

Does that qualify as "actually do something"?

Advantage of the democrats:
America will be browner in the future.

Disadvantage of the democrats:
Their electoral base is too fractured. White hipsters(an infertile group that will disappear in a 100 years), blacks and latinos.
These groups have very diverging interests and some times outright hate each other.
Their leadership is getting more extreme. Keith Alisson might be the new chair.
The GOP has a good amount of latino politicians, if they are able to get a little more of the hispanic vote the democrats are done. Maybe 40%.

Latinos vote Democrat because they want to bring in their family members, but as they get settled in the US that starts to change, and they are usually more religious than the average white liberal so they might not be so pleased with a muslim chair.

It is a start depending on what they actually do.

What if they did exactly what was proposed? I just don't see how it's a good thing.

If they repeal Obamacare and go back to status quo, millions of people will lose insurance coverage. The tax cuts proposed by Trump would create trillions in deficits and fall well short of providing the benefits he claims. What is so good about this? What do you think would be a good outcome of these two proposals?

If they keep the good parts of Obamacare that people like and come up with something that will help control health care costs.

Not sure what they are going do until we see what they come up with.

Sounds great, but that wouldn't be a repeal.

Wow, someone else gets it. Either trump provides the hope and change obama promised, or in 4 years we will see another wave election, and if no one in the next 20 years steps up to the plate to hit the home run, our entire political system and country will collapse.

That's true, unless Trump can push through policies that sustain economic growth in the 5-6% range. You can spend if the growth is there. That's been Obama's downfall. 1.5% growth.

So what happens when Trump goes? He's just one guy, and a very inconsistent one at that. They can't re-write party policy to reflect the random musings of The Donald when he's constantly contradicting himself.

He's 70 and overweight and won't be around forever. It seems like he was more of a lucky gambit made by a desperate party, than an actual attempt at reform.

No, he wasn't "made by a desperate party". He simply took it from them. They fought him all the way until election day, and he still won. His message will live on and whoever runs in 8 years will need his endorsement to win.

As far as his health, the mofo was doing 4-5 rallies/day for the last two weeks, besides twitting at 3am. He's pumped full of HGH or whatever they're giving him and like many old people today he'll probably live well into his 90's. He'll get a 2nd term, believe that.

The Bobblehead was the sickly one.

The only way the Democrats come back into office especially in a "wave" is if they completely purge and overhaul their party. They have to change their figures and message to get anywhere in the future. That's what the Repubs have had to do. And if the Dems do that...well hell, they might actually be good for the country. But the progressive, globalist, multicultural establishment, loony left of the past 10-15 years is done for at least a generation.
