This series 'The Day...' is about 'extraordinary' moments in NHB/Vale Tudo history.

Holy shit...This fight was all over the place... Crazy crowd... Weird ending...

The 2 fighters decided to resolve in the ring a lil misunderstanding they had in the streets...

We need some commentary on this. I've never seen this shit. Why was there bad blood in the first place? What was said after that monster cheap shot?

Also, the fact that dude even got back to his feet after that beating from full mount shows how tough these VT fighters were.

Awesome post, bud.

Seems that Pelé & him had a streefight b4, like Moura tried to get him with his crew...

Seems there was a rivalry between ChuteBoxe & Capoeira back in the days, in the streets of Curitiba...

I'm guessing this wasn't much of a rivalry... That was an absolute soul taking.

Apparently this was Pele's first professional fight. An absolute monster. It is still crazy to me that Pele fought for Pride, Cage Rage, Jungle Fight, Extreme Fighting, but never fought in the UFC. Wtf were they thinking, not signing him? ESPECIALLY pre-Zuffa. Makes zero sense.

Puzzling, indeed..

Pelé was really an unlucky bashtard... Came to the spotlights a lil bit 2 soon, when the market wasnt ripe yet...

Then, in Pride, he had his chance... Against Ronin, Spider threw the very same knee and connected, while Pelé´s knee missed a lil bit the target...And Pelé ended up losing...

On a sidenote, probably due to the influence of his Vale Tudo days, Pelé could have sometimes a weird fight IQ...
Like, suddenly looking for the clinch, being the stronger man, throwing the other dude awkwardly, and ending on the bottom...

Pretty crazy career. KO Hughes but KO by Gassaway... When he was on he was a monster, but you're right, he tended to have brain farts mid fight.

Why was there bad blood in the first place?

Landi was a hotheaded asshole inside and outside the ring. The Capoeira vs Chute Boxe rivalry started over him & Moura primarily, he also had beef with Jorge Pereira, Macaco, Johil de Oliveira and Anderson Silva - so basically with Capoeira, team Rickson, Luta Livre, and finally his own team.

They were interested, but at the time he followed the money and his teammates to PRIDE. He went 0-2 there losing to Matsui and Newton, making him 0-3 in the span of a year. He took time off from competition after that, returned and lost his next 2 fights in smaller promotions as well, and at that stage in his career, with a five fight losing streak, his chance at fighting in a major promotion again was gone.

Thank you for that info. Is the beef with Silva why he left for BTT?

Pele is my all time favorite fighter and one of the best Vale Tudo NHB guys. I remember I bought tickets to WFA in LA Rampage vs Lindland knowing he was scheduled to fight but he got injured in the last minute and was replaced by Martin Kampmann, he still in the fight program I got. He got robbed by Matsui in Pride and couldn't string 3 wins in a row together. Wins over UFC champs Matt Hughes, Pat Miletich, Anderson Silva (Muay Thai match) and Bellator champ Alexander Schlemenko at the end of his career is super duper impressive.

His fights with Macaco showed us back then that a striker can beat a Jiu Jitsu fighter in the ever evolving NHB Vale Tudo days and is a pioneer of successful strikers at that time like Igor Vovchachyn and Maurice Smith to some extent. I follow him on Instagram and he was scheduled to fight in July but something happened so he's still not retired. Pele is one of the forgotten legends in the short history of MMA and derserves his name in some hall of fame along with Igor Vovchachyn.

This fight is what I was talkin´ about concerning his weird fight IQ sometimes...He could lose dominant positions just like that...

Still, nice slick and astonishing [to see him reaching this grappling level in 1999] transition here to get the armbar:

@ 6mn25

His leg broke viciously on a checked kick against Gassaway he definitely was not koed. If his luck was a little different in some of his bouts he would had wins over 3 other UFC champs including Chuck Liddell(knocked down Chuck with a big shot) Carlos Newton(nearly finished him) and Dave Menne(desputed decision could've gone either way). Respect to Pele he was Anderson Silva before Anderson Silva.

Well that's good to know... I was looking at his record earlier and saw that loss, and I was smh... A broken leg makes a bit more sense, and makes me feel better about it lol.

<DCWhoa>

This was the first Pele fight I ever seen and that was a time when Vale Tudo/NHB or MMA as its now called was predominantly dominated by grapplers Jiu-Jitsu or wrestlers. This gave me a big breath of fresh air to see a striker Muay Thai figher compete with these guys.

That was a fucking beat down. It was almost effortless lol.

I remember Pele as being the original scary guy in MMA, he was almost mythical back when I started watching in 95, it was years before I actually got to see him fight. He was like the boogeyman, heard about him but never seen him.
IVC was the only stuff I could get with him on back then
He was Wanderlei and Anderson Silva before they were if you know what I mean

Years Later I got to see him main event vs Lee Murray in Laaaaaandan

Not the only reason, but one of the main ones. Pele still wasnt over the feud even a decade later:

@Bobby Digital

This feud is actually recent, and it´s coz of the book Spider released, accusing Pelé of misbehaviours (story about Spider´s daughter)...

There was already some tension btw the 2 coz of the 2 MT fights they had [Spider claiming he won 1 at least].

Recently, they almost brawled in the streets of Curitiba...

The main reason why Spider went to BTT is coz he felt boycotted by Pride & Chuteboxe, and coz of contract disputes (Chuteboxe was centralizing the $$$).

Spider was actually planning to leave with the Rua brothers but they backed out at the last moment...
