Sorry for the long read but it's interesting.

There's no doubt that Ronda Rousey is the biggest star mma has ever had. Everybody knows who she is, and everybody knows what she does. When she fights Twitter blows up about her, I've never seen any other fighter on Twitter as much when they fight, except for the May-Paq fight. Celebrities want to be seen with her and she frequents tv shows and movies like nobody else in the sports history. She makes the rounds on ESPN more than any fighter ever. She is the most famous mma fighter ever and it's not close

    BUT

There's something very strange about her situation. For being by far the most famous fighter ever her pay per views don't sell like her mainstream media coverage would suggest. Don't get me wrong her pay per views do really good, but hers average around 400k, with 600k being her highest one. And she's never sold out an arena. It's very odd because everybody knows when she fights and everything about her but for some reason that hasn't turned into pay per view buys and people going to the arena. The numbers for UFC 190 aren't out yet but as far as I know I would be shocked if it got more than about 600k PPV buys. The UFC promotes her more than anybody ever except for McGregor, and it's worked masterfully but it just hasn't turned into PPV buys for whatever reason. My theory is that she is like Kim Kardashian, everybody knows who she is but 99% of those people aren't going to watch Keeping up with the Kardashians, or in Ronda's case her fights. Why that is I'm not sure. Maybe it is because she's a girl and a lot of the population doesn't care abou girls fighting but they still know who she is. I don't know, what are yalls explantion for the the curious case of Ronda Rousey

Sometimes it takes two fighters to sell a fight.

Sherdog may give Rousey a hard time over her opponents, but given a fight-famous opponent, she may net more fan traffic. Right now, only the in-the-know fight fans have any background knowledge of Ronda's opponents. My guess is that Cyborg or another prospect female fighter with decent press and an exciting aura will help the sell. Ronda does her part, every time. Don't blame the judoka for winning her matchups

Imagine finding the best candy-eating kid in the whole world.

And then finding the fucking Hogwarts candy shop, or whatever it's called.

And planting that candy eating kid directly into the middle of that candy shop.

That is called good marketing, god bless ronda. god bless the ufc.

    hater tears are delicious.

    conor bless.

No, it's not. Just another way to say the same thing 100 other Ronda haters have said today. And most of them didn't feel the need to start a new thread just to garner maximum attention.

Hater.....? What are you talking about? I literally said that she's the most popular fighter in mma history by a wide margin and that I don't understand why she doesn't get better buy rates and stuff considering her mainstream media presence.

Oh relax. Don't you see what dana has done here? He has said she is the biggest star for years even when she was booed by most. He said that because he knows all the morons will start thinking "she is? well then I like her".

She is very intriguing and bad-ass to casuals, but that doesn't mean they are actually going to pay to watch her crush people. Why would you pay for a fight that will hold in a simple gif the next day ?

What's curious to me is that she called the mole under her eye a Beauty Mark: "Just ask Cindy Crawford.". Rong, Ronda; Remove It.

She's a novelty, a side-show. Everyone may have heard of her, but no one really takes her seriously.

Ronda isn't as popular as they try to make people believe. They push her because she is breaking into an entire new demographic population in women. The women who didn't like fighting as much or feminists see her as a normal girl and happens to fight. That empowers them to watch. Until the womens division gets more competitive she won't make blockbuster numbers. Same reason why HW title fights don't make huge numbers. It's getting better though, Werdum is champion and is consistant but also seems beatable. I for won prefer to watch fights where at least the other fighter has some sort of chance. Especially now that Ronda proved to not just be a judo thrower and armbar specialist there's no way she's losing anytime soon.

I'd argue she's the biggest celebrity - everyone knows who she is. That's not necessarily the same as people being willing to put down money to see her in action.

For an extreme example, think of Paris Hilton. Everyone has heard of her, but how many people would pay to see her?

Of course Rousey is much better at what she does than Paris is, so a lot of people will pay to watch Rousey. Just not as many as paid to watch Lesnar, GSP, Jones or Anderson. She's a bigger celebrity by far than any of them, but if star means having the power to bring viewers, she's less of a star than they are.
