JOHN WICK TV Series THE CONTINENTAL at Starz with Keanu Reeves Attached

John Wick is the latest feature film to get the small-screen treatment. Starz announced Friday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that it was developing The Continental, an ongoing drama series based on the John Wick film franchise starring Keanu Reeves. Reeves, Starz execs said, is expected to make an appearance in the potential series but will not star as the project exists side by side with the feature universe.

The potential TV series is set in the John Wick universe and focuses on the inner-workings of the exclusive Continental Hotel, which serves as a refuge for assassins.

Chris Collins (Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, Man in the High Castle) will pen the script and serve as showrunner should the drama move forward. The original film's creative team are on board the TV off-shoot, with Thunder Road Pictures' Basil Iwanyk — who produced the first two features and serves in the same capacity on the forthcoming third — leads an exec producing team that also includes Chad Stahelski (who directed the first two and is returning for the third), original franchise screenwriter Derek Kolstad and Collins, David Leitch (who co-directed the original) and Reeves. Stahelski will direct the premiere of The Continental, should the script move forward.

The John Wick franchiseproduced by Lionsgate, which now fully owns Starz — has grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. The third feature, with Reeves starring, is due in 2019. Starz will retain domestic multiplatform pay TV and SVOD rights to the series, while Lionsgate will control international, domestic distribution and home entertainment rights.

<5>

Was worried when I saw the notification and I was like "no way broadcast TV can... oh, Starz... I'm down"

Will watch.

Wonder if McShane and Common could possibly pop up as well?

Nice, seems like there is plenty of room to explore in the John Wick universe. I hope Ian McShane and Lance Reddick are in it as regular cast members.

Count me in. McShane would be a hell of a nice addition if they can swing it.

wish this was coming to netflix I don't want to pay extra for starz, maybe it will hit netflix in the future

Fuck yeah dig that it is on Starz. Glad they got Reeves to at least pop in. Fun idea. John Wick universe is awesome.

As it exists in the Universe I could definitely see many of the movie characters getting roles that are more fleshed out. An character arc for more than a few episodes for a few of them would be more than interesting.

Could give Punisher Series a run for its money for most interesting hitman series.

Don't know if this will work, they need someone badass plus not sure they have enough material to work with even J W 2 was kinda low on story.

Being at Starz and inc Keanu makes this more compelling for me. I thought JW2 sucked and had no interest in a network tv serial. This has some potential.

Mel Gibson to Star in John Wick Prequel TV Series THE CONTINENTAL for Starz and Lionsgate Television

Mel Gibson has been set to star in The Continental, the prequel to the Keanu Reeves film series John Wick. The Continental will be presented as a three-night special-event TV series, produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television.

The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals. No word yet on who’ll play Winston Scott (the hotel owner is played in the films by Ian McShane). Gibson will play a character named Cormac.

It’s a rare foray into television for Gibson, who made his acting debut on the Australian television drama series The Sullivans from 1976-1983. During that run he made his Australian screen breakthrough in George Miller’s Mad Max and Peter Weir’s Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously en route to becoming a star in Hollywood with the Lethal Weapon films and Best Picture-winner Braveheart, which he directed.

The John Wick trilogy has grossed almost $600 million worldwide. The films have been scripted by Derek Kolstad and directed by Chad Stahelski, and John Wick: Chapter Four is currently shooting in Germany, France and Japan with Reeves reprising his assassin character.

Executive producers Greg Coolidge (Wayne, Ride Along) and Kirk Ward (Wayne) are writing the event series and serve as showrunners. Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Stahelski, Kolstad, David Leitch, Shawn Simmons, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will also serve as executive producers.

McShane has previously said he won’t appear in The Continental but might do voice-over work, and Lionsgate has said that while Reeves likely won’t appear in the series, he’s in talks to be an exec producer.
