Colin Farrell in Talks to Play Penguin, Andy Serkis in Talks to Play Alfred in THE BATMAN

The Batman has found its Penguin. Colin Farrell is in talks to play the DC villain, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Andy Serkis is going from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the world of DC, as the actor is in talks to join The Batman as the Dark Knight's butler Alfred Pennyworth, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The move will reteam Serkis with filmmaker Matt Reeves, who directed the actor in two Planet of the Apes movies. Serkis played the villain Klaue in 2018's Black Panther for Marvel Studios.

Filmmaker Matt Reeves is behind The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, with other actors including Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Batman ally Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

The Penguin, also known as Oswald Cobblepot, first debuted in the comics in 1941's Detective Comics No. 58 and was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Gil Kane. He is known as a master manipulator and his penguin-like physique and waddle. While he favors using henchmen to do his bidding, when confronted one-on-one he's known for using his umbrella as a weapon.

Bruce Wayne’s faithful manservant — and Batman’s more-than-capable aide — Pennyworth debuted in 1943’s Batman No. 16, although he didn’t get his familiar name for 26 years; he was, originally, Alfred Beagle. No matter what name he went by, he’s been the sidekick responsible for keeping Batman alive for decades, being equally versed in manners of upper-class society and field medic techniques.

There Will Be Blood Actor Paul Dano to Play the Riddler in THE BATMAN

ymzcgPV.jpg

Filmmaker Matt Reeves has found his Riddler for The Batman. Paul Dano has signed on as the classic villain, Warner Bros. announced Thursday.

Dano's version of the character will be named Edward Nashton, the man who in the comics later goes by the name Edward Nygma and adopts the villainous persona. Frank Gorshin and John Astin played the villain in the 1960s TV series, while Jim Carrey played him in 1995's Batman Forever, directed by Joel Schumacher.

Robert Pattinson is starring in The Batman, with Zoe Kravitz set to play Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright on board as Batman ally Commissioner Gordon. Jonah Hill was at one point eyeing a role as either the Riddler or the Penguin, but the deal did not come to fruition. Reeves has said he plans to include a rogues gallery of Batman villains in the film.

Dano was recently nominated for an Emmy for his role in Escape at Dannemora. The actor directed, co-wrote and produced the critically acclaimed film Wildlife. His other film credits include Love and Mercy, Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine,Youth and Okja, among others.

Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, the Riddler — aka Edward Nygma, or "E. Nigma" — is a supervillain who aims to challenge Batman in a battle of wits, leaving clues and riddles for the world's greatest detective to solve in order to catch him. Since debuting in 1948's Detective ComicsNo. 140, he's gone on to become one of the most high-profile Bat-villains, appearing in movies, cartoons and video games across the past seven decades, stretching his question mark gimmick as far as it could go and then some, including spending some years as a good guy when he realized it was just as much fun to solve crimes as it was to commit them.

Zoe Kravitz to Play Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN

BZjBUtW.jpg

Matt Reeves and Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Batman has found its Catwoman: Zoe Kravitz has nabbed the role of one of the highest-profile members of the Caped Crusader's rogue's gallery, according to several sources.

The decision came down over the weekend after a rigorous testing process that saw saw Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska, Eiza Gonzalez and Kravitz read with Robert Pattinson, who is set to play the Dark Knight. The testing process occurred over the first week of the month, and the four were then narrowed to two late last week.

Reeves is directing what is described as a grounded take with a large rogue’s gallery as the antagonists. Jeffrey Wright is already on board as Batman ally Commissioner Jim Gordon.

Catwoman is one of Batman’s classic foes who also happens to be one of his longest-lasting loves. A cat burglar whose weapon of choice is a whip, the antihero is the alter ego of Selina Kyle. She was a fixture on the 1960s Batman television show, on which she was played by Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt. Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the character in her most popular big-screen incarnation, 1992’s Batman Returns, while Halle Berry toplined a 2004 solo outing, which bombed at the box office. Anne Hathaway also played the character in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

Kravitz is already well-known at Warners, as she has appeared as Leta Lestrange in the studio’s Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts spinoffs. She also voiced the role of Catwoman in 2017’s The Batman Lego Movie. Kravitz recently co-starred on HBO’s Big Little Lies and is set to star in the small-screen version of High Fidelity, which is being made for Hulu.

Jeffrey Wright Cast as Commissioner Gordon in Matt Reeve's THE BATMAN

99e4Neq.jpg

There's going to be a new commissioner in Gotham City. Westworld star Jeffrey Wright is in negotiations to play Commissioner Gordon, the classic ally to the Dark Knight, in Matt Reeves' The Batman.

Robert Pattinson is headlining what is being planned as a grounded take on as the DC Comics crime-fighter. Casting is in early stages for a who's who of Batman's rogue gallery.

Jim Gordon, depending on what stage career-wise the character is portrayed, is the police commissioner or detective at the Gotham City Police Department and Batman's reluctant ally. In recent screen appearances, Gary Oldman played the role in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy while J.K. Simmons played the role in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Reeves will be directing from his own script for the Warner Bros./DC feature, and will produce with his Planet of the Apes collaborator Dylan Clark.

The Batman is set for a June 25, 2021, release.

Wright has a busy fall ahead of him with the release of Steven Soderbergh's financial drama The Laundromat and Warners' adaptation of The Goldfinch. He is set for the next James Bond film, No Times to Die, and Wes Anderson's next outing, The French Dispatch.

Dragonlord Fantasy Casting Vol. 22 - THE BATMAN

Last week, fans were shocked and outraged that Robert Pattinson was reportedly the frontrunner to take the mantle of the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves' The Batman which is said to feature a much younger Batman in a detective-noir driven story. Naturally I have my choices on who would be a great Bruce Wayne as well as the rest of the supporting characters and villains.

New Behind-the-Scenes Details on How Robert Pattinson Won the Role of Batman

FiJRv93.jpg

Two weeks ago, a black jacket-clad Robert Pattinson faced flashbulbs and reporters at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of his period drama, The Lighthouse. When one guest approached him at the reception and said, “I heard you were the new Batman,” he offered only a sly smile and stayed mum.

In reality, Pattinson was not the Caped Crusader…just yet. Hours after his Cannes duties in designer duds, he would be on a plane to Los Angeles to face perhaps the biggest test of his acting career: putting on a Batsuit for director Matt Reeves, who is casting The Batman.

That test was officially passed Friday, when Warner Bros. announced that Pattinson had won the role. The decision was the culmination of an intense process that insiders describe as surprisingly quick. As opposed to most superhero casting efforts, which often include far-and-wide searches and dozens of screen tests for the likes of Superman or more recently, Spider-Man, the Batman process was notably smooth.

“It was quick,” says one Warners insider. “Quicker than normal.”

Reeves, who was hired to write and direct a new Batman movie in February 2017, was envisioning actors while penning the script, according to sources familiar with the filmmaker’s thinking. It helped that this new Batman needed to conform to a defined age bracket. He is written as around 30 years old, and the story is neither another rehashing of his origin nor the tale of a seasoned crimefighter ruling Gotham City. He is Bruce Wayne still trying to find his footing on his way to becoming the genius detective.

This, of course, eliminated Ben Affleck, as THR first reported back in July 2017. (Affleck and Warner Bros. denied the recasting at the time because the actor, who had played the role in Batman v Superman and Justice League, was to have headlined his own stand-alone movie that was sidelined when the studio began rethinking its superhero strategy.)

AyInjhv.jpg

Reeves is said to have considered Pattinson, 33, early on in the process, says one source, even though no outreach was made. Reeves didn’t even know if the actor wanted the part. Since Pattinson shot to fame as a heartthrob vampire in the Twilight films, he has built a solid résumé in smaller, well-reviewed independent films like Good Time and Maps to the Stars. He has assiduously avoided big studio franchise films.

But that fact actually made him more attractive to Reeves and the executive team at Warner Bros. Specifically, Pattinson has not yet appeared in a Marvel Studios movie, and name-brand actors not working for the DC Comics rival are becoming few and far between. While there are no contract provisions prohibiting Marvel actors from appearing in DC/Warner Bros. movies and vice versa, execs believe that cross-pollination dilutes both brands and can cause confusion for audiences, especially from a marketing point of view.

Nicholas Hoult, 29, who became Pattinson’s chief rival later in the process, had been appearing as Hank McCoy, aka the Beast, in the X-Men movies. But Warners execs didn’t disqualify him because the X-Men flicks are not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are ensemble in nature and Hoult spent large chunks of those movies unrecognizable as a furry blue mutant.

Reeves is said to have spent hours poring over the two actors’ work and met with them in April. Pattinson has far more name recognition than Hoult, but it was his work in Good Time and High Life, among others, that Reeves kept on coming back to. Hoult, too, had impressed the deliberate filmmaker, known for his thought-provoking work on the Planet of the Apes franchise, with The Favourite this winter.

The two actors in short order became the only contenders, and during the week of May 20, when Pattinson flew in from Cannes, both shot screen tests in costume on the Burbank lot. Each had a pre-negotiated deal in place, ready to go into effect for whoever had the final contingency lifted, the screen test.

Pattinson and Hoult put on a suit from a previous Batman movie, as has become customary in the Bat-test process. (Christian Bale, before landing Batman Begins, performed his test in the suit used by Val Kilmer in 1995’s Batman Forever, for instance.) Did they embody the character? How did their eyes look and act? Is there a specialness to them? Those were the questions Reeves and the studio wanted answered.

“(Reeves) wanted very specific things,” says one insider. “He knew what he was looking for.”

Reeves and Warners execs took the week after Memorial Day to deliberate their choices, and by Thursday night, made the calls to the actors. The Batman who would lead the studio into the 2020s had been found.

Pattinson now moves on to the next stage: getting fitted for his own Batsuit, and training for a shoot that will likely take place in early 2020.

Riddler, Firefly, Catwoman and Penguin Reportedly the Villains for THE BATMAN

aV8b26O.jpg

Director Matt Reeves has four members of his Rogues Gallery for The Batman lined up, according to Geeks Worldwide.

First up is The Riddler, likely the main villain, who will be “a criminal mastermind in Gotham City who takes delight in incorporating riddles and puzzles into his schemes, leaving them as clues for the authorities to solve.” Reeves is seeking a male actor of any ethnicity between the ages of 30 and 40.

Next up The Penguin, a “Gotham City mobster.” He is a “short, obese man with a long nose, and he uses high-tech umbrellas as weapons.” Reeves is searching for a male actor of any ethnicity between the ages of 20 and 40.

Catwoman will also be in the film, as a “Gotham City burglar” who “wears a tight one piece outfit and uses a bullwhip for a weapon.” Reeves wants an actress of any ethnicity between the ages of 20 and 30.

Another villain that will show up is “a professional arsonist known as the “Firefly”.” He “attempts to burn all the places that he lacked the privilege to go as an orphan child.” Reeves is searching for a male actor of any ethnicity between the ages of 20 and 30.

The Hollywood Reporter and Justin Kroll at Variety previously mentioned that Penguin and Catwoman may appear in the film. Danny Devito played the role of Penguin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, alongside Michelle Pffeifer, who played Catwoman. Forbes first mentioned that Riddler could be in the movie as well. Jim Carrey played The Riddler in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. Firefly was a secondary antagonist in the 2013 video game Batman: Arkham Origins.

Matt Reeves is writing and directing The Batman, which will see High Life star Robert Pattinson suit up as the Caped Crusader. Filming will begin sometime next year for a June 2021 release date.

It's Official: Robert Pattinson to Play the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN

s0rRXNi.jpg

Warner Bros has approved Robert Pattinson as the star of The Batman, the trilogy of films that Matt Reeves will direct later this year, Deadline hears.

Pattinson has been considered a frontrunner because the filmmaker liked him, but the studio was torn between him and Nicholas Hoult, and wanted both of the actors on tape because this is such a big decision on a cornerstone Warner Bros DC franchise. Those meetings happened yesterday, and the decision was made. Hoult, who starred in Tolkien and is about to reprise in the latest X-Men: First Class film Dark Phoenix, was impressive, but Pattinson will be the guy and negotiations will get underway any moment.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark, who produced Reeves’ Planet of the Apesfilms. Expect an announcement imminently.

Pattinson is a strong choice. He certainly has been at the center of a zeitgest franchise before in Twilight Saga, and he has used the time after to show his chops as an actor in films like High Life, and is starring for Warner Bros in Christopher Nolan’s next film, and just debuted in the Robert Eggers-directed The Lighthouse at Cannes.

They’ve got to work out a deal that will clearly include options on at least two more films, but this is considered a formality in a drawn out process. Reeves’ film tracks Bruce Wayne in the formative stages of Batman, which is why they needed an actor in his early 30s.

This film will in no way carry on the work that Ben Affleck did as the older Batman in Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.

And DC just lost a ton of its comic fanbase with this official casting.

That kid better put in serious Prep Time at the gym. Right now he could pass for Batwoman.

Mr Mom is my favorite Batman, so hard to judge based off looks alone.

Give the guy a break dude. BTW I enjoyed those twilight films and he is definitely a better pick then Hoult. Team Vampire Batman

I hate to do this, but the rules of the High Table of Bros are very clear on confessions such as this...

Man, I can totally see this.

I hope he's good.

People talked shit about Affleck and now most dont even want him to leave. Hopefully Robert does a good job and gets jacked up. Takes some TRT or hangs out with Jones and lets him hook him up with some Tbol.

Hoult seems a bit of a goof and unlikely to be a franchise carrying leading man. If only choosing between two, Pattinson is the clear choice. He has the acting chops and should be able to pull off the Wayne playboy with ease, add some Hollywood gear for them gains and he should fit the suit too.

He is a good choice way better then the last casting.

People don't realize that this dude silently got better, you will be surprised.

I thought Affleck was great as the older, battle-scarred Dark Knight.

Of the 4 choices they came down with, I would have preferred Armie Hammer who at least looks the role and has a respectable resume of movies he has been. He would not have been my first choice

I'm telling you this dude will run circles acting wise around Affleck.

In terms of an early 30's actor he is among the best in my opinion.. yea all jokes with his past and whatnot but every single role he had in the last years has been memorable even if the movie was a stinker he works with what he has and he sure as hell will work with the Batman costume lesser actors did.

I never really liked Affleck. He wasn't bad really just passable I guess is the best word I can come up with.
