So Jan Böhmermann, a German comedian / satirist, has triggered what now has become a matter of international affairs.

You may not be familiar with Jan Böhmermann, but he is the guy from the video here.

So what happened?

The first thing that happened was that Extra 3, a German satire show on public television, aired the Erdogan song that most of you may have seen by now. We have discussed that video in the thread here.

Jan Böhmermann reacted with a "Poem to Erdogan" in his own show. It's important to know the context; I translated the entire passage of the video for you below.

Jan Böhmermann: Welcome to Germany nonsense mission number one! It's us. We have nothing to do with satire.

Sidekick Ralf Kabelka: Exactly!

Böhmermann: What our Hamburg colleagues have done in "Extra 3", this kind of pushing the envelope, we cannot do that.

Kabelka: We can't!

Böhmermann: And I say: Hats off! Great stuff!

Kabelka: This is a completely different league. Also the "heute show" [other satire show], how good that is!

Böhmermann: The "heute show", I find that one really good. I have heard in the past rumors that we are here keen on the time slot of the "heute show", or anything that belongs to Oli Welke: I would never say that is not true, in no way. Oli! (Blows kiss) Greetings! Huge fan! I watch your show every week to inspire me.

And Satire: "Extra 3" this week has nearly triggered World War III - big applause for that one! Yes! With a great skit. And that is something that maybe you have to ... Obviously in Turkey, they watch every little satire or nonsense show, so probably also this one. Perhaps, dear Turks, if you now - (siren sound) - if you are watching now: Maybe one has to briefly explain something: What have the colleagues of "Extra 3" did - i.e. dealing humourosly in content with what you are doing politically down there - that is in Germany, in Europe, covered by artistic freedom, freedom of the press, of freedom of expression ...

Kabelka: Article 5!

Böhmermann: What?

Kabelka: Article 5 of the Basic Law.

Böhmermann: Article 5 of our constitution, our great Constitution: You can do that here. You can not just say that the government should withdraw the satire or that needs to be somehow removed from the Internet. In Germany, something like that is allowed, and I think it is fantastic how civil society has risen this week - because of Beatrix von Storch [AfD politician], who wanted me shot two weeks ago, I think, because of this funny song we made. And now she is at once up front, when it comes to press freedom and artistic freedom. All the people were at once on a line: This has to be approved! Je suis "Extra 3".

Kabelka: Very good.

Böhmermann: Mr. Erdogan, there are cases where you do things in Germany, in Central Europe, which are not allowed. So: There are artistic freedom - Satire and art and fun - that's allowed. And there is the other, what is it?

Kabelka: Abusive criticism.

Böhmermann: Abusive criticism. This is a legal expression, so: What's abusive criticism?

Kabelka: If you defame people. If you argue just below the belt, right? If you insult them and degrade them only over only private things that matter for them.

Böhmermann: Deprecation. And this is also not allowed in Germany?

Kabelka: That's abusive criticism, yes.

Böhmermann: Did you hear that, Mr. Erdogan?

Kabelka: This can be punished.

Böhmermann: This can be punished? And then things can be deleted - but only afterwards, not before?

Kabelka: Only afterwards.

Böhmermann: This may be a bit complicated - maybe we explain it with a practical example once very briefly. I have a poem that is "defamatory". perhaps we can have a Turkish-inspired version of a Nena song? And can we maybe show very briefly only the Turkish flag in the background with me? Very good.

So the poem. What comes now, you cannot do that?

Kabelka: You must NOT do it.

Böhmermann: If this would be performed in public in Germany, this will be forbidden.

Kabelka: I'm of the opinion: that would not happen.

Böhmermann: Okay. The poem is called "Abusive criticism". [NOTE: the poem rhymes nicely in German)

Dopey, cowardly and uptight,
is Erdogan, the president.
His member stinks badly like Döner,
even a pig's smells nicer.
He is the man who beats girls
while wearing rubber masks.
What he likes most is fucking goats
and suppressing minorities.

Böhmermann: Now that would basically be a thing ...

Kabelka: Nope!

Kicking Kurds, beating Christians
and viewing child pornography with it.
And even at night he does not sleep,
instead has Fellatio with a hundred sheep.
Yes, Erdogan is full and by
a president with a small penis.

Böhmermann: (laughs at a keyboard arabesque of the band) As I said, that's a thing where you have to ...

Kabelka: You CANNOT do something like that.

Böhmermann: You can not do it.

Kabelka: Not say "President".

You hear every Turk whistling,
the stupid sow has shrivel balls.
From Ankara to Istanbul
everyone knows this man is gay,
perverse, full of lice and zoophile -
Recep Fritzl Priklopil.
His head as empty as his balls,
the star of every gangbang party.
Until the dick's on fire when he pees,
that's Recep Erdogan, the Turkish president.

Böhmermann: So, that is something that in Germany ...

Kabelka: Below the belt!

[applauding audience]

Böhmermann: Very briefly. Hey! Hey! Hey!

Kabelka (angry): Do not clap!

Böhmermann: Thank you. So, this is now a story, what could happen now?

Kabelka: Sometimes you take it out of the Mediathek [online library]! This can now be cut out.

Böhmermann: So if Turkey or its president would mind, he would have to look for an attorney first.

Kabelka: Yes, exactly.

So that is pretty meta all in all, great example of satire IMO.

ZDF (German public television, Böhmermann's channel) was quick to delete the video from its Mediathek (the online platform where you can watch shows after they were aired).

Erdogan got mega-rustled and demanded punishment. Did you know that Erdogan has 1800+ trials against Turks who insulted him going?

In any case: The right thing to do would have been for Merkel to shut Erdogan down hard and early. Instead, she released a note to press saying that she found the video "deliberately hurtful". She called the Turkish Prime Minister to appease him, but to no avail.

So now the Turks have officially lodged a complaint with German police, and there actually is a German law that forbids insulting foreign heads of states that is a remnant of the Kaiser-Reich (when it only extended to monarchs, actually). This law also states that such lawsuits will only be allowed if the German government allows them.

So Merkel now brought herself into a lose-lose position. If she allows prosecution, people will shit on her hard, deservedly. If she does not, it looks like she backtracks and she will enrage Erdogan who only just began his work as a refugee lockkeeper. In any case, she is in a really bad position.

Jan Böhmermann has cancelled his shows and now is under police protection due to threats against him.

Hilarious, that's where appeasing psychopaths gets you.

Seriously Jdragon wtf is wrong with your country ? when did ze Germs lose their minds ?

Ok so it's another example of cavemen being offended by tasteless satire (à la Charlie Hebdo) ?

Or another example of Merkel going out of her way not to rustle foreigners at the expense of Germans' rights ?

Welcome to the West : where it is perfectly fine to piss and shit on one's flag, but don't dare to make fun of a third-world head of state if you don't want the chancelor to intervene personaly.

WTF West, u so messed up.

Appreciate the distinction, if the west saw the shit talking islamist and the stupidity of the west get in the east they shit bricks.

In a way its just history repeating it self, west weakens and the east once again grows stronger. Pendulum swings back and forth, its just your time in the gutter.

Why do you care? According to you, we deserve everything that may or may not be coming our way because Holocaust.

IMO it is a case of an outdated law and a weak Chancellor. If she were in a strong position, she would have declared that "she did not agree with the poem, but such is life". Instead now, she is trying to buy time.

Erdogan has always been a pussy. I dream that one day Putin will push his shit in.

I don't buy that.

At the risk of derailing the thread :
- Persians' journey in Europe (Darius & Xerxes in Greece) was a mega failure.
- The Arabs' journey in Europe never went further than South-Western France, where they had their asses handed to them, in a time when France didn't even exist in its current form.
- The Turks' journey in Europe never went further than Vienna, where the were beaten as well.

So no, the truth is that the East never had shit on the West.

Never in history and under any circumstance would the East have posed any threat to a (hypothecally) united France, German Kingdoms and Austria and England.

Mubarak, Hussein and especially al-Gaddafi were much worse and those who came after them were not exactl what you would call an improvement.

I care cause your political and social stupidity maybe be contagious, hell can be said it already infected much of the west.

What you think you can wash away industrializing rape murder genocide of people and a few years all if forgiven ? HA. Maybe had you been properly punished for WW2 you wouldn't be so fucked right now ? consider that for a monument. Rapefuggess scream nazi and your police let their own people get fucked. Gems seem to want punishment, your own gov is out to destroy your own culture. You cant say that has nothing to do with the past and your crimes.

You are rambling incoherently. So if we would have faced more severe punishment in the past, we'd be better off today? Lolwut?

Pols destroyed the Tutonic order.
At their height of the Commonwealth largest land mass in Europe (sans Russia?) and largest population the German kingdoms nor Austria dared to war with them.
You forget it was Sobieski that saved Vienna from Islamic enrichment.
Russia pushed the Reich shit in and made it to Berlin.
Soviets could have literally not using nukes erased the entire western Europe from existence, East never posed a threat ehh.

Je Suis Böhmermann. Thanks for doing the translation, this is very interesting. A real test of character for your country, I hope you guys pass it.

Are you saying today's stupidity in Germany has nothing to do with guilt over the past ? you are literately afraid to enforce your own laws at the fear of being labeled racist nazi.

Germany should kick out every turk from their cities. That should teach that donkey erdogan a lesson.

Oh I see, you are using the East vs West in a Cold War setting. That's not what I mean.

By West I mean European Christian. Maybe I am using a more anthropological / classic definition.

Russians and Slavs in general fall under that definition.
