As we all know, Andrei Arlovski has become the perfect gatekeeper for the HW division.

Back in 2016, the former UFC HW champ Arlovski was submitted by Josh Barnett after a brutal war. At 37 years old, Arlovski had now been finished 3 fights in a row by top HW contenders (Stipe, Overeem, Barnett). It became clear at that time, that Arlovski's days as a legitimate HW contender were over. If we was going to stick around in the UFC, he was going to have to embrace a new role as a gatekeeper, fighting prospects who were on the verge of breaking into the rankings. Unfortunately for Andrei, the first prospect he faced in that role was a young, inexperienced beast from Africa by the name of Francis Ngannou. While Andrei would get knocked out in that fight, he would later fully embrace the role of litmus test for young HW fighters and use his smarts and experience to put an end to a lot of hype trains. It is interesting to look back on these fights and see how prospects fared after the Arlovski Test.

    Francis Ngannou
Before Arlovski fight: 9-1, 4-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Ngannou TKO Round 1
    Arlovski Test: PASS
After Arlovski fight: 6-2, 6 KO's, UFC HW Champ

    Marcin Tybura
Before Arlovski fight: 16-2, 3-1 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Tybura Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: NEUTRAL
After Arlovski fight: 5-4, gatekeeper level fighter

    Junior Albini
Before Arlovski fight: 14-2, 1-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Arlovski Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: FAIL
After Arlovski fight: 0-3 UFC, was finished all 3 fights, released from UFC

    Tai Tuivasa
Before Arlovski fight: 8-0, 2-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Tuivasa Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: NEUTRAL
After Arlovski fight: 2-3, still young but appears to be gatekeeper level fighter

    Shamil Abdurakhimov
Before Arlovski fight: 18-4, 3-2 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Shamil Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: NEUTRAL
After Arlovski fight: 1-1, gatekeeper level fighter

    Walt Harris
Before Arlovski fight: 11-7, 4-6 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Harris split Decision W, later overturned to NC
    Arlovski Test: NEUTRAL
After Arlovski fight: 2-2, gatekeeper level fighter

    Augusto Sakai
Before Arlovski fight: 12-1-1, 1-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Sakai split Decision W
    Arlovski Test: NEUTRAL
After Arlovski fight: 2-1, still young but appears to be gatekeeper level fighter

    Jairzinho Rozenstruik
Before Arlovski fight: 8-0, 2-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Rozenstruik KO Round 1
    Arlovski Test: PASS
After Arlovski fight: 2-2, KO'd Overeem and JDS, appears to be legitimate contender level fighter

    Philipe Lins
Before Arlovski fight: 14-3 (PFL HW Champ), 0-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Arlovski Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: FAIL
After Arlovski fight: 0-1, KO'd in his next fight, doesn't appear to be UFC level fighter

    Tanner Boser
Before Arlovski fight: 19-6-1, 3-1 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Arlovski Unanimous Decision W
    Arlovski Test: FAIL
After Arlovski fight: Hasn't fought yet, remains to be seen but his hype has completely fizzled out after failing the Arlovski test

    Tom Aspinall
Before Arlovski fight: 9-2, 2-0 UFC
Arlovski fight result: Aspinall submission Round 2
    Arlovski Test: PASS
After Arlovski fight: Hasn't fought yet. Looks like he will be a legit contender

Next up to take the Arlovski test, Chase Sherman. How do you think he will fare? Will he pass the test and go on to be a legit contender like Francis, Jairzinho, and Aspinall? Will he squeak by with a decision W and prove his worth as a gatekeeper level fighter like Tybura, Tuivasa, and Walt Harris? Or will he lose and end all hype as a HW prospect like Albini, Lins and Boser. The Arlovski Test will provide us with the answer on Saturday.

I think it goes to decision. I was heavily leaning Arlovski but finding out that Sherman has quit the fire department to focus on MMA full time has made me think he might come in quite improved.

Obviously the better you look against a middling fighter with a typical style in the division, the better you do overall. Call it the gatekeeper test.

Good thread TS, kinda funny how many fighters performances against a guy like Arlovski truly seem to be quite indicative of their potential.
Just like with Brunson at 185, though i'd say that current Brunson is a better fighter than current Arlovski.

This is why Arlovski gets paid $300k a fight to be the ultimate litmus test. Andrei "The Talent Evaluator" Arlovski

He's also coming off a PED suspension, might not be as durable or conditioned

I think Arlovski has what it takes to frustrate Sherman (who is a solid HW but hasn't overly impressed me) when he's at 100% peak gatekeeping mode. But I worry about his durability. The Aspinall fight wasn't long ago and it's not like he didn't take any damage by getting gently taken down and choked. He almost got TKO'd standing in the first with punches. Then in Round 2 Tom smoked him with a blast-double that sent him crashing into the side of the Octagon at about 87 mph and seemed to visibly stun him before securing that RNC.

this is a great thread. i will say this, other than the Ko losses to Ngannou and bigi Boy, hes been fucking solid for the last few years. he isnt a punching bag hes in every fight and no one has really steamrolled him to a dec win.

Chase already had a run in the UFC. He is getting put in there to lose, but being HW he might still win. IMO Arlovski will still be in the UFC when chase is cut in his next couple fights. I can't believe we lost Overeem and JDS, but keep getting these guys brought in. Definitely happy to be wrong though for some fresh blood.

While Chase did have his previous run in the UFC, by all accounts he seems to have reached a new level lately with 4 straight KO's (yes the competition has not been high level). He recently quit his day job as a firefighter and committed full time to MMA, and he's also just 31 still which is fairly young for the HW division. I'd still consider him a bit of a prospect and do not believe he is in danger of getting cut any time soon, especially if he is able to beat Arlovski, considering they just brought him back and he had a vicious KO W in his first fight back in the UFC. But I agree he's probably not a legit contender level fighter. This fight with Andrei will tell us a lot about his potential going forward.

You gotta keep at least one recognizable punching bag around at HW (no disrespect to arlovski). Out of him, overeem and JDS he was the cheapest of the bunch so it was a no brainer. Tho the UFC kinda fuked up cause Mark Hunt could've filled this role better as he was way more durable and willing to brawl
