The argument people use against Fedor in regards to his PRIDE days.

It seems though that a lot of people try to compare Fedor's run to today's MMA when the landscape was different. The format of how Pride made their fights with match ups was completely different than the UFC. The Japanese culture really enjoyed freak show, underdog, giant vs small match ups. Pride had their top fighters fight cans many times for the Japanese crowd. Now the reason you can't really fault Fedor for fighting some cans is because he also beat the elite fighters while doing it. Fedor was just so ahead of everyone else that he took easier fighters to stay active which is a risky thing to do especially at HW. I don't know if it's true or not but I read somewhere that Zulu stepped up to fight Fedor because Pride couldn't find an opponent for him.

TS, did you just watch Fedor's fights on youtube for the first time or something? Your thread is like 9 years late.

Very few around here when the merger happened were honestly claiming that Fedor wasn't the best. It was really clear that he was.

Why didn't he fight Werdum and Barnett in Pride, instead of the cans.

I guess he and Josh were friends and Kharitonov was a former teammate. Werdum is prolly only good HW he didn't fight in Pride and then he wasn't a big success yet.

I don't put the Barnett thing on Fedor, he wanted that fight and Barnett just didnt. Straight up avoided him on a NYE card, said hed fought too much and turned the fight down then fought on it anyway. Then the affliction mess. Werdum of Pride was green and not really a name, I dont think it was on anyone's radar.

So what if he was undersized ? Who stopped him from bulking or changing his category ?

Some are underskilled naturaly exmpl Semy Shilt geneticaly way way less coordinated and skilled and fast then Fedor.

Some got geneticaly worse cardio by deafult.

Size is not the only gift you can have.

Plus moving a smaller body you're gonna be more coordinated and faster and possibly better endurance though grappling bigger guys depletes you.

"Fedor is small" lol dude won the genetic loterry overall.

He was days away from Fighting Barnett in Affliction and it was cancelled because Barnett failed his drug test. He obviously had no problems facing all of the UFC champs in America with drug tests (since it's cool for newer accounts to accuse him of that as well). So all the excuses people use aren't really relevant.

Also people forget Pride was in Japan. It was a Japanese show for their tv ad their culture. Look at the dates. Fedor was taking EXTRA fights in between bigger fights a lot of the time vs some of those names. He was doing them favors for new years or whatever. Same way Sakuraba was taking short notice fill in fights. Those lesser name fights were the ones that GSP lost. Anderson lost. Jones wouldn't take. Fedor won his and his big fights. There's so much lost about Fedor's Pride run. Especially with the forum info having been deleted in the move over. it's really a shame. I'll try to post some stuff. Make no mistake, Pride really wasn't too buddy buddy with Fedor. They weren't doing him any favors and didn't even really want him to be their champ at the time. Fedor was being pressed on all sides. He had a fine line on the Russian side due to his sambo/judo eligibility which he was collecting money from which was essentially how he lived to feed his family through most of this. They were threatening to pull it if he didn't do what they were telling him to do. He was also having issues with Pride trying to pull things over on him. All this time he was coming out of the army deep into training for Sambo and MMA. It's how he kept himself busy during the tough times.

His own team said before his Affliction wins they were worried about him and his training and hunger had decreased immensely. Not to mention his hand issues, which is why his training changed so much. There's a lot more to his career than people discuss simply because it wasn't really reported.

What do you mean forum stuff being deleted in the move over? Old threads are completely gone or just hard to search?

The entire history of the forums was wiped out except the last year or two. :(

Pride easily had the better hw's and tougher format

Fight multiple times on same night plus rules and fighters

Pride was the goat

The one argument I hear people make in regards to Fedors PRIDE run where he built his legacy is that Fedor was fighting lesser fighters and I'm sure they say that strictly because he was not fighting in the UFC.
No it's because he basically had ONE top 5 fight every 2 years. He very rarely fought top fighters. He is HW GOAT, but his level of competition is crazy weak.

This is UFC? how are there always all these Fedor threads in UFC discussion? Worldwide, bro. Do you even Sherdog?

Newer accounts - so mma knowledge and expirience dosn't exist outside of actively posting in sherdog forums ?

Lol juice - he was in pride, japan legal roids, he demolished Hearing who was admitedly on steroids whiped the floor with him.
Beat inhumanly explosive and ripped pride crocop who admited to taking HGH.
No testing. Besting roided prime top beasts. Ufc fighters didnt necessarly roid less as all they had to do was cycle off before the date they knew they could get tested.

Gsp lost to lesser names ? Wtf Serra was a stud. Clear top 10. Almost or arguably beat Hughes. Destroyed Trigg.

Jones wouldn't take : Chael who came of almost beating p4p #1 Anderson and now champion Bisping is a lesser name to you. You compare a top 5 MW to utter cans with 8-20 records.

Hand issues ? Ok so CroCop and Shogun get their losses rewisited they have knee issues. It's his body. Big Nog gets revisited fights a truck ran over him. Rampage got oblique kicked his knees are messed up now - gets praise.

Other points are mostly valid. He fought who they had. Wanted to fight Barnett. Green Werdum would've been better fight then cans but its ok all fights won't hapen wasn't a must fight.

Just cause you post on sherdog more doesn't mean you are more valuable or knowledgable. Bass Rutten doesn't post here .

He fought the best what sport had then.Fighters were learning rules through fight, half of them did't know shit, rules, but they were in.Now all of them are cans, back then they were heroes, whos fighting for fans, pride. With respect, without trash, shit talking like today

i mean, this is just a lie. Herring 2002, Nogueira 2003, Randleman post Cro Cop KO and Nogueira in 2004, Cro Cop in 2005, Mark Hunt in 2006 (A fight that was offered to barnett and he declined)

Fedor fought an average of 4 times a year, i've named the great fighters he beat every year he beat them, this is omitting the second tier wins that he had like Schilt, Coleman and top 5 guys later in Sylvia, Arlovski and Rogers. Purely in PRIDE, he fought everyone except barnett and kharitonov, both of whom couldn't make it past Nogueira and Cro Cop respectively.

He has a total of I believe 7 top 5 HW wins (Randleman was a LHW, not HW). So it's less than every two years, but it was over a year on average between his fights. For Comparison, GSP has 16 top 5 wins. 16 vs 7 .. let that sink in.

Randleman had just KO'd Cro Cop, a top 5 HW, and was a former HW Champion in the UFC so idk what to tell you

Fedor beat every top heavyweight of his era besides couture and barnett, and he was scheduled to fight both. Not really sure what else he can do.

over a year on average? What does that factor in? His retirement? His time in RINGS? are you averaging it over his whole career? It seems like you created a criteria that sounds as bad as possible to prove your shitty point

Randleman was not a HW and was not top 5 at HW. He was top 5 at LHW. There is nothing you can tell me. No one would care to see GSP fight the #5 LW fighter, Fedor gets no pass.

16 top 5 wins for GSP, 7 for Fedor. He is still HW GOAT .. but his accomplishments compared to other guys are 2nd tier. Still an all time great and HW GOAT.

GSP lost to a sub-top 5 LW tho
