It seems though that a lot of people try to compare Fedor's run to today's MMA when the landscape was different. The format of how Pride made their fights with match ups was completely different than the UFC. The Japanese culture really enjoyed freak show, underdog, giant vs small match ups. Pride had their top fighters fight cans many times for the Japanese crowd. Now the reason you can't really fault Fedor for fighting some cans is because he also beat the elite fighters while doing it. Fedor was just so ahead of everyone else that he took easier fighters to stay active which is a risky thing to do especially at HW. I don't know if it's true or not but I read somewhere that Zulu stepped up to fight Fedor because Pride couldn't find an opponent for him.
