Are we living in the age of the immediate rematch? I am trying to understand why but Its beyond me.
It Seems to be a regular occurrence/expectation these days especially for fights that have clear decisive decisions.
First I wasn't crazy about a rematch, but if the fight was close and were some discrepancies EX: Machida/Shogun 1 I could understand why we can warrant a rematch. Now we are having immediate rematches for those who have gotten clearly beat.
How is this going to effect the future of the fighters that clearly deserve a shot at a title.
EX: Frankie Edgar (never was a huge fan of) but I do call it as I see it and think he is being screwed here. Does this guy have to wait around for Conor to be done playing around in another division to fight?

Then you have rematches against other fighters that now have your title because you "used" to be champion? EX: Ronda Rousey....Its technically not a "RE-MATCH" in that case ....but it certainly doesn't make you a number 1 contender. If so how does it?

These rematches should be only for those fights that are close where their could be a possible chance the other fighter won. Thats my opinion.

I am sure some will disagree for some reason in which I would like to hear.

Simple reason. Pay per view buys. All they care about are ppv buys. Might as well start fixing fights so they can get the matchups that provide the most ppv buys while we're at it.

Uhhh... the UFC is about money and entertainment -- actual 'deserving fights' are secondary. Everyone knows this! Or should...

If you want a listed bracket of who plays who and then goes for the championship, go watch football or somethin!

I just wish they were more consistent, but its truly entertainment.

Like the other two said. This is about selling fights. Don't fool yourself into thinking you're watching a professional sport Ike football, basketball or hockey, this is prize fighting. We're making two guys fight inside a cage in their underwear for our amusement. I'm cool with it. Occasionally I'm bummed because my favorite fighter gets screwed, but fuck it, if they announce that the Rock will be fighting Mike Tyson for the Super Badass Championship of the world I'll happily demand they take my money.

They have been doing this immediate rematches for a while now.

I am fine with this IF it doesn't hold up the title. The champs should be fighting 3 times a year barring injury or a tough fight that they need time to recover from. I think Conor can fight whoever he wants but I don't like that the FW belt is on hold. Frankie deserves a shot and a long time champ like Aldo should also get one in a timely fashion.
I don't like immediate rematches unless controversy or injury, even if a long time champ. Wiedman is an example, he was owned and no way does he deserve a rematch after that nor should he want one, he has to work on his game for that rematch.

Frankie Edgar started the whole rematch phenomenon in the UFC

Good point Wiedman is another example. Rematch .....smh

did you read the entire thread or just the title
just the title. I dont think they should have done immediate rematches even if it was close i would rather they rematch at a later date.

Well some people are pissed off about this. Im surprised someone with a decent join date like you would go that route. There was a time when fans supported the ufc hoping it would get the mainstream attention and recognition to move into a professional and respectable sport. Now, after people have been there hoping for it so long, all we get is random match up and people getting paid more because they talk shit to an unsustainable level. And fans digging it... well it is a shame.

By rematches White, the idiot, constipates the divisions.

Plain and simply it's because of 2 reasons.

They tend to do rematches when "invincible" people lose, in a hope that they will win and it will be like it never happened. Good examples of this are Renan Barao, Anderson Silva, Cain Velasquez, Ronda Rousey and now possibly Conor McGregor. You can bet your bottom dollar, that if Jones lost to Alexander and if Georges lost to Hendricks those would be instant rematches also.

The second reason is the whole "hey, if the fans loved it the first time, let's do it again!". This one annoys me, because the UFC are so big now, it's not about hardcore support anymore, it's all about the masses. I understand business, and I get it, but your hardcore's buy the tickets, the merch, UFC fight pass etc. the fairweathers order the PPV so they can lazily watch from home on occasion. These ones tend to crossover with the "invincibles" losing. It's like hey, Anderson got KO'd, but let's do it again - people want to see it again! and it's true, but where is the "sport" in that. Hey man, Lynch should have ran that in, nevermind man - let's do that Superbowl again brah! Big ratings!

It just doesn't work like that, and it's driving me slowly away from being a hardcore. I love MMA, but I do not love the UFC as an organisation, I really just don't.

I agree with you, Rematches should be for fights that gave us problems deciding who won (GSP/Hendricks type of fight). Some beatdowns don't need to happen twice. Now there's cases where the fight is close up until some fighter starts whooping the other...those both guys should fight at least 2 or 3 times before facing each other again. But idk UFC is weird when it comes to what's "fair" and what isn't

GOOD read man. Your first point especially makes lots of sense. I forgot all about Renan Barao and his rematches. Even though poor Aldo didnt get to follow that trend, although its not a final deal yet he may still get it if Conor ever starts defending his belt

The age of me paying for fewer PPVs is upon us.

Yeah man, I don't like it either. Giving instant rematches for poor reasons just deludes the value of a championship belt.
