The Saudi royal family are building a 600-mile barrier to fortify the northern frontier of their kingdom.

The fence and ditch, punctuated with radar surveillance towers, command centres and guard posts, aims to protect the Saudis' oil-rich territory from invasion by the Islamic State insurgency.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud inaugurated the first phase of the border security project in September, soon after Islamic State's Sunni insurgency swept across Iraq.

The multi-layered barrier, which will eventually stretch across the Saudi-Iraq border from Jordan to Kuwait, includes 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, 10 mobile surveillance vehicles, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, reports Janes.com.

Citing a promotional video, the defence industry magazine reported the six-mile-deep barrier consists of a ditch, two fences and a patrol road connecting the watchtowers and guard rooms. The video included footage of thermal imagers and battlefield radar systems that can detect individuals at up to 12 miles away and vehicles at up to 24 miles away.

Islamic State sees Saudi Arabia's links to the West as a betrayal of Islam and has called for 'lone-wolf' attacks against Saudi security forces, the Shi'ite Muslim minority and foreigners.

Saudi forces have joined U.S.-led air strikes against Islamic State positions in Syria and mobilised conservative Sunni clergy to describe the ideology of the al Qaeda offshoot as deviant.

Expansion of the Islamic State could turn into an existential struggle for the Saudi regime, which many hardline Islamists see as decadent and corrupt.

A key goal of jihadists is the ultimate capture of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam and home to the Two Holy Mosques of Mecca and Medina.

What else can they do, the corrupt morons created Jihadistan on their Northern border and now they've realized that they can't control the horrific monster they unleashed. They are just awakening to the reality that all these Sunni maniacs in the desert to the North are never going away.

Payback is a bitch. Btw, Turkey, you are going to be enjoying the same situation because of your sins.

The House of Saud's days are numbered. They've created a force they cannot control, and they will be brought down by their own radicals.

The Turks should be forced to pay by being kowtowed into accepting a Kurdish state in what is now Northern Iraq. We need to pay back the Pashmerga for being the only non-Shia force willing to take on ISIS.

Saying the kingdom created isis makes as much sense as saying they were created by CIA or Mossad.

Saudi Arabia has been exporting wahabism for decades. The Saudis are the chief backers of terroristic, Islamic extremism the world over. The Saudis have been getting in bed with the bad guys for years upon years, and have indeed been the ideological backbone of the Islamist cause. ISIS wasn't directly created by them, but they were the ones which cast the seeds in the filed.

They are promoting conservative Islam, sure, but saying they are promoting terrorism is serious accusation. You have proof of that? Or is it mostly speculation? Like bush was behind 9/11 n Mossad created isis.

Conservative Islam and Islamic extremism generally go hand in hand, at least in that part of the world.

Having seen the 'security barrier ' in Israel up close an personal numerous times, this looks remarkably similair. Maybe they should get the Israelis in to help with the design and engineering??

This is nonsense....Wahabis and Salafis are the two most misunderstood words in this forum. None of the main Imams support khawarij aka isis. They are absolutely against it hence why the Saudis who support this stuff leaves the country. They slaughter these people. Why do you think they have done no damage in Saudi, but in other muslim countries? And please dont tell me because they dont want to hurt their own. If these people could get hold of the royal family, they would behead them straight away

Wow, history repeats itself here. Ask the French how good of an idea a big pretty wall is when you leave giant gaps in it. Should IS get that far, I doubt they'll have a problem "Belgium-ing" Kuwait and going right around it.

That's a load of horse shit Zankou. If anything the US is responsible for the emergence of ISIS. It was developed after the American invasion of Iraq.
