The 2018 Heavies Awards - Submission of the Year
Welcome to the 2018 Submission of the Year (SOTY) Award!

    SOTY TP 3.png

Emergency conditions are often said to be defined by an imminent threat to life, limb, or eyesight. I think MMA fans would find the definition well-suited to the very sport we love itself. Never without debate, it's recognised to date that the most common submissions in mixed martial arts are the rear-naked and guillotine chokes as well as the armbar, a hyperextending joint lock to contest-ending effect. But practitioners and fans alike know the nuances of not just what submission, but how said submission is approached and applied are equally as meritable a talking point.

Now it's your turn to voice who submitted their opponent in such a way and under what conditions that you'd call it the very best of 2018.

As with all our awards, you have one (1) vote, and five days from time of posting to cast that vote before the poll closes. Don't forget to chime in below after voting and give us your reasons why; honourable mentions welcome.

Solid nod but I already had one kneebar and while Zabit's stretch variation was cool, I reckoned Claudio's the superior of the two; I'm surprised Silva still has a leg to walk on.

To no surprise, I had many on the threshold but wanted to cap our choices at 6 so we stretch not the conversation too thin. I could have effortlessly bloated this to 10 or 15 options. Some guys were personal favourites of mine (like Steve Mowry's opening-round Amerikana against Ben Moa at Bellator 205) but I aimed to find gems that would appeal to all, or as close to that as possible.

Sorry about Zabit; were you able to find a close second from the options available?

The Boa Constrictor Oleynik should just be given this honour in perpetuity.

Both Puelles and Craig ones were amazing, late submissions after being battered for over 2 rounds and both coming out of nowhere. Oleyneik's Ezekiel was something never seen before and Ryan Hall's heel hook was lightning fast and tight as hell, and however much has BJ Penn declined, he is still a BJJ prodigy and getting him in such a high risky, low percentage move. It's a tough outing, I picked Puelles one, he was all but knocked out during that fight, outclassed and battered for the whole fight and that kneebar was so tight and nasty...

Oleynik, because he did something that wasn't even supposed to work from that position.

Hipster thread is hipster. Aljo or Zabit win. I get its boring when all of the outlets say the same thing, but these are just facts. I'll give it to Ryan Hall out of the options presented.

Hard not to give it to Hall for submitting the legend Penn... not to take anything away, but Penn is far past his prime.

So, I went with the popular choice. Ezekiel Choke for the 2018 win...

    Definitely Oleynik.

Hall/ Penn shouldn’t even be on that list.

They're all good submissions but I just can't go against The Boa Constrictor, this guy constantly lives up to his nickname. They've gotta rename it to the Oleynik choke lol
