What are your thoughts on this? I think it's hard to tell when/how badly he was reaping. It appears that the leg is over the arm, which leads me to believe that it would be okay, but then Calasans moves his arm down next to his leg, essentially putting himself in a reaping position (not intentionally). I think this just exposes the silliness of the rule in many cases and that we should take some sort of action. Why this was an instant DQ, I have no idea. I thought this would be a "severe penalty" now.

Thanks deadlizard. Yeah, I think it's dumb too. It did look like he was "reaping" a lot during the match to be honest, I'd at least rather see them give a warning or two, though. Not just an instant DQ (especially after his leg crossed the hip at other points and he wasn't in trouble for it)...that seems shitty.

What is reaping anyway? Can someone explain what is going on there please? I don't get any of this discussion.

When the outside leg crosses over the hip (such as in an ankle lock position, or one leg x-guard), it is considered reaping because the knee is being forced inward and twisted almost like a heelhook. The leg clearly crossed over Calasans' hip, but it didn't look like it was torquing the knee, but the rules don't differentiate.

He was definitely reaping for a long time earlier in the fight, and actually turning Calasans' knee inward, but the DQ seemed like it was just because the foot traveled past the hip line as it slipped off Calasans' body. Were they issuing any warnings earlier? Aren't they supposed to reposition when this happens according to new rules?

I'm not sure how the new rules work in relation to reaping now, I'm assuming it's just the same as it was before, but I did see them stop Terere for a second and the ref raised his hand a few moments before he was disqualified - it just doesn't add up. It's supposed to be four serious fouls equals a disqualification, not two. A severe foul is still an instant disqualification. My head is spinning.

yep, reaping hard. you might have a lasso grip over your knee reap but it still a reap

Agreed he was reaping way before the call was made. I thought the new rules were to go into effect for this tournament. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the rule but I was under the impression a minor penalty was for reaping (on sweep attempts) and DQ on submission attemps (ie: attacking the ankle)?

problem is that the ref did a few reset and gesture but we cannot tell if it affected the score board as well.

True. He very well may have given him the warnings and repeated reaping may have been what caused the DQ.

or he could have call for stalling or ask for a reset and Terere would have argued back which is an instant dq.

IBJJF really needs to make an official statement for each controversial ruling for the sake of the sport.

But that would put their ref under fire.

he still looks like he can hang with the top guys. calasans was definitely not able to take him down or really do much. unfortunately he probably won't be able to go to the mundials unless they are not in the US

he isn't allowed to enter the US?

fuck!!

fuck!!

that is what i heard on this board, but i am no authority.

which makes the DQ that much worse. he isn't getting any younger. But we can look forward to the next generation of beasts he will produce.
