I read in all the articles about Lloyd Irvin that he's a controversial figure in the BJJ world...why is that?

Because his marketing gimmicks are fucking annoying.

hes been known to hand out blue belts to people training under a month n shit like that

His team is legit, lot of great competitor train under him (e.g JT Torres, Mike Fowler, Ryan Hall used to be)

but his marketing is .... well spam mail, spam internet ad. annoying? hell yea, successful? well yes as well
don't get me wrong, he's a great business man, there's a reason why his seminar is so successful/popular among bjj instructor (not BJJ seminar,i'm talking about money making seminar)

btw. i have nothing against him.... in b4 shit storm on me

u kno jasoncyclops its really funny u mention that because i remember my last instructor told us he was going out of town to a lloyd irvin seminar and when he got back we asked him what hed learned from the master etc and he never explained. makes a lot of sense looking back at it now seeing what a money grubbing scheme all that was. ah well glad i got out of that was $150 a month for some reformed karate bullshit labeled as MMA

I trained under him for a bit in 07. Great instructor. awesome team. The competition level was high. He explained things very well and would make us drill them endlessly. Not enough instructors do that. Plus, he takes care of his fighters / competition team very well from what I saw. I don't have a bad thing to say about him at all except he charged too much for my taste.

Master Lloyd is prolly one of the more technical BJJ coaches out there. Guy is really intelligent, and knows quite a bit of detail about techs. Where do you think Ryan got that from?

He is def one of the best coaches out there.

Fantastic instructor. Makes his guys drill a ton. He set up a house where all his full time students live. So they all live and train together. He has all the tools to create champions. Just give him time and he will have a black belt world champion.

how would someone be able to live there? i'm looking in the near future to take a 3-6month break and train full time this sounds like an amazine experience.

Go there. Join his gym, and show that you are serious. If you prove that you are, he will set you up as an instructor, and you will give free housing. Not sure about free food though. I know multiple guys who've done this.

terrorsherrer sounds like a douchbag.

Appears as though you read something somewhere and are regurgitating it now for us to see. The guys with firsthand knowledge of him are saying nice things.

anyway, do any of lloyd's students not call him master lloyd?

-just asking

Yeah, Ryan was kicking @$$ and taking names before he even got his blue. He wrecked my crap when we were white belts.

I am not a student of his, but Mike Moses is kinda associated with him, and I call him Master Lloyd.

My gym was a Irvin affliate that wasn't closely linked to LI. That changed recently when Irvin replaced our BB (who didn't get his belt from LI) with one of his instructors from his home gym in Camp Springs, MD.

There's now an emphasis on basic, fundamental, comp-winning techniques. We drill harder than we did before.

I don't care for the "Master" part, and the gym rules are more formal than before – apparently we are supposed to face the wall when tying our belts (to "respect the mat"), we say "Team Lloyd Irvin" as we break from being shown a technique, some of the LI diehard guys say "WUUSS" every time they agree with something the instructor says (like soldiers say "Hooah".) I have no idea where this stuff came from, but it’s the folks from Camp Springs that do it.

It's annoying, but not enough to make me leave.

(For what it's worth, some students of Leo Dalla –who gave LI his black belt – call him "Master," too.)

From what I have seen, good quality schools, instructors, and students. He must be doing something right...

IMO, one thing that the traditional people dont seem to care for is that he really promotes that you dont have to train BJJ for 10 years to be a BB. That seems to have ruffled feathers in the community. I'm no where near a BB, so that is just from what I have observed.

If he can train you more efficienty then it shouldn't take 10 years. I do appreciate the BJJ high standard for belting, but no other martial art is near that.

I like what I hear about team attitude and such. His traditionalism is fine by me as I come from Judo, so I'm used to (and happy with) bowing before I enter the gym, the mat, before I roll, after I roll, and when we start/end class. I refer to my teacher as sensei because I respect the hell out of him.

There's a thread about your top 5 wish list for teachers...Lloyd Irvin certainly could earn a spot on mine

I've ordered some of his stuff and it is really good. I got the Mike Fowler dvd set. it cost like $129 or something, i thought it was expensive but was like whatever ill give it a try, I learned so much, then like a week later lloyd mailed me another free thing. Then like 4 months later I got a message on my email saying they totally redid all the dvds and if i wanted all i had to do is put my name and address and they would send the entire new set and evertying free, and well they did. So honestly like with how much free stuff i got it ended up being worth it.

Yes, some of the stuff lloyd says in some of the emails is annoying but who else is gonna send out free vids of students like JT, Wilson G, Mike Fowler, etc.
i learn a lot from those free ones that he sends jsut by email.
Also i dont think it's right 4 people to judge Lloyd Irvin for him givingout blue belts etc fast, but think Lloyd Irvin got his black belt super fast. I think it only took him like 3 and a half or 4 years. So he is just having his students do what he did to get their so quickly, and well his students do well in tournaments so I think all the haters should just stop, it's one thing if somebody is getting promoted too quick and they suck, but his students get promoted fast and end up being top notch.

I train at an affiliate school. I am not on his A team. I have trained with his top guys at Camp Springs every once in awhile. I can tell you that his methods are different than other peoples in terms of hard work and developing a never say die work ethic. He is also outstanding figuring out what someone is good/weak at, and making them drill that stuff.
