first of all, I don't know which one is the right subforum for this. it if should go somewhere else, mods feel free to move it. I post it in the Worldwide MMA discussion because it will mostly cover the european combat sports scene and I think the people posting here are probably the ones that will find it most interesting.

an austrian friend of mine and I have started a martial arts blog, where we combine our love for martial arts and combat sports with our passion for traveling. the plan is to visit gyms in different countries and write about it. he is more into the traditional styles, while I do MMA, Kickboxing, etc.

I will share all the content(articles, videos, etc) here. if you like our stuff, you can follow us here:

we've done it in different gyms in Vienna(Austria), the Basque Country and southern Spain for now. this weekend we're going to Bratislava(Eslovakia) and in a couple of weeks to Budapest(Hungary), where Budapest Top Team has not only invited me to train MMA with them, but also told me they'll try to get permission to bring me with them when they cross train with the hungarian National Wrestling Team.

countries like Germany, France and Ireland are targeted for mid and late 2016.

Located in the small town of Martutene, in the outskirts of San Sebastian, Kuraia Fight Club is the definition of old school. Saying that the facilities don’t look all that nice is an understatement. The warehouse inside of which the gym is situated feels like one of these industrial, abandoned buildings in post-communist eastern European countries. It looks rusty, cold and leaky. But once in the inside, the mat, the equipment, locker room and the overall facilities are clean and adequate. Plus, when you get familiar with it, the external look of the gym becomes part of its appeal.

As is happens with a hornet’s nest, its value and reputation don’t lie on its structure but in its inhabitants. Some of the best fighters in the region train here in Kuraia Martutene and MMA coach Mikel Cortés and Kickboxing coach Mikel Rodríguez are both respected pioneers in the Basque and Spanish combat sports scene.

This is where I got started with mixed martial arts, where I have trained the longest and where I have learned most of what I know about fighting. The gym has the right mix of serious hard work with an informal, easy going, friendly atmosphere. Training can get really intense. Especially during the sparring sessions, that usually come at the end of every training session.

Training takes place every day morning and afternoon in different forms: kickboxing and MMA classes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under black belt Patrick Almeida and free training, whenever members with access to the keys decide to meet up and train together out of the regular classes.

One of the best features of Kuraia Martutene is that you get a lot of value for the 55€/month membership fee. It has a very nice weight room and daily training sessions available. It is also very common for long time members of the gym to have a copy of the keys, effectively being able to use the facilities at anytime.

For anyone moving to Donostia-San Sebastian and interested in training kickboxing or mixed martial arts, Kuraia Martutene is definitely the place to go. The only real drawback is its location outside the city, which makes it hard to get there unless you have a personal vehicle.

As it is my first time doing this, I am excited, a little bit nervous and also unsure about the response I will get when I explain my intentions to them. The people I meet inside the gym are an accurate representation of the neighborhood: most gym members seem to be Serbian. They are very friendly to me and surprisingly open to the idea of me, a complete stranger, writing about their gym and taking photos. It is a good sign, they have nothing to hide. I believe there are two main reasons a martial arts gym would choose to be secretive: either it is a big gym where world class competitors train and do not want to reveal the details of their preparation for upcoming big fights, or they are a fraud taking advantage of the ignorance of their members.

Viktoria’s Gym is neither of those things. It is the typical small local gym, where training is hardcore and the environment friendly and laid back. The coaches are a big Serbian man called Boban Djordjevic and coach Vanchana, from Thailand. Both come across as friendly and down to earth. It is the first time I am training Muay Thai under a Thai coach and I find the idea exciting.

ottakringerstrasse.jpg

Ottakringer Straße is the long street that separates the 16th and 17thdistricts of Vienna. It is easy to tell why this street is sometimes referred as “the Balkan Mile”, with lots signboards and flags in shops, cafes, and restaurants announcing the nationality of the owners. Bulgarians, Serbs, Croats, etc. That is where Viktoria’s Gym is located.

Training takes place every day from Monday to Friday, from 19:30 to 21:00. If you want to show up and try, Monday is the day for that. The monthly membership cost is 70€, which is reasonable for 5 training sessions per week. Also, no paperwork needed.

12592458_516136728548300_4096410464455578901_n.jpg

The martial arts taught include Kickboxing, obviously the combination of kicks and boxing techniques; Muay Thai, a traditional and extremely hard fighting style from Thailand, where punches, kicks, knees and elbow strikes are allowed; K1, a middle ground between them, with knees being allowed but not elbows; and Savate, a French style of kickboxing that I am not very familiar with.

After the usual warm up, we hit the pads in an intense session and follow with stretching, finishing with a show of respect to the coaches and training partners. I am a little disappointed when they tell me sparring takes places on Fridays; I was really looking forward to that. I guess I will have to wait a few more days.

In the end, I love the experience and I go back home with a big smile. I like it there so much that I decide to sign up and train there for the rest of the time I will live in the 16th district. It will help me sharpen my kickboxing skills, as well as to meet the local population and practice my German.

In short, my first attempt goes very well and I am both really excited to go try other gyms and happy about finding a good place next home where I can go back to training on a regular basis.

last training session in Viktoria's Gym, after 2 months with the serbs. great people. the coaches wanted me to take an amateur kickboxing fight, but the earliest one they could find me was after my planned departure from the austrian capital, so it will have to be some other time.

MMA in Bratislava coming soon...

Octagon Fighting Academy (Bratislava)

This has started to look a bit like Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight. The similarities are obvious. A mix of combat sports and tourism, good friends visiting new places, doing crazy things and having lots of fun. The difference is that unlike DFW, I do get punched in the face by professional fighters everywhere I go.

Welcome to Bratislava, Slovakia. It is in this beautiful European city where our next gym is situated. The Slovakian capital is only one hour away from Vienna, so it was a logical destination for our first trip in Central Europe. With around half a million inhabitants, a varied offer of leisure and entertainment, and relatively low prices for a European capital city, Bratislava is an excellent touristic destination...

Keep up the good work fellas! Hope you pick up good training and maybe some things that will help in life!

I like that you guys are doing this, I wish "Looking For a Fight" was more about the fighters and training. I've always thought it would be cool to visit the local gyms when I travel anywhere. Are they usually welcoming, or what? Also, have you met any established fighters or upcoming prospects?

thanks guys.

I'm heading to Hungary on monday to train with Budapest Top Team. then the week after, I'll train in MMA Vienna. Mairbek Taisumov comes from there, though I think he mostly trains in Thailand now.

I am in Budapest, training with Budapest Top Team at Predator Fight Gym.

I trained wrestling yesterday. hard to follow the class when you don't know a single word of hungarian (it doesn't sound like any other language I've ever tried to talk). still, training was cool.
got hurt in my calf about the end of the training session, when two other guys fell over my leg. but I'm going to the striking class today anyway, I didn0t come to Hungary to sit around.

hopefully I can convince someone to film a sparring round in that ring and you guys can watch me getting trounced by some hungarian guy.

posting to get updates...

I will be interested in following this. I'd even want to hear about ancillary stuff like how you guys contacted gyms about letting you visit and train, or maybe discussions about where to visit based on local MMA culture and so on.

facebook is the main way to contact them. I usually find their page and send a pm. until now, they have all been very receptive. if they don't respond on Facebook and I am really interested, then I email them.

The more I do this, the easier and more enjoyable it becomes. I am a traveler with a purpose now, not just a tourist. This time it was in Budapest, Hungary.

The Budapest trip was a low budget one. I arrived by bus from Vienna on Monday and returned to the Austrian capital on Wednesday. I found accommodation with Couchsurfing and I tried to avoid eating out or any unnecessary expenses. When you are a student, you either travel like that or you travel very little.

I had contacted Budapest Top Team, which from what I have heard, is the most important MMA team in Hungary, and they had invited me to train with them a couple of times at Predator Fight Gym.

I just trained in MMA Vienna, Mairbek Taisumov's gym. They told me that now he goes to Tiger Muay Thai when preparing for a fight though.

One of the things I like the most about both traveling and training martial arts is that you end up meeting a lot of interesting people. This time was not different. My latest gym visit in Austria has been to MMA Vienna, probably the highest profile MMA gym in the country.

As the name indicates, it is a MMA gym. But it has also a wide offer of lessons in other combat sports. Like BJJ, Muay Thai, K1 kickboxing and boxing.

This is the where the chechen/viennese UFC Lightweight standout Mairbek Taisumov trains, thought they told me he moves to Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand when he is preparing for an upcoming fight. Definitely, that one is on my long list of places to visit in the future. Taisumov is 5-1 in the UFC’s extremely competitive lightweight division, having won his last four fights by knockout.
