Home fight for Takanori Gomi against "Maestro" Dong Hyun Kim in Japan

Earlier this morning, Eastpress Japan announced that Takanori Gomi will be awaiting UFC Fight Night 117 in Saitama, Japan on September 23, 2017. His opponent in the Lightweight Division will be "Maestro" Dong Hyun Kim. Both men meet each other in the Octagon of the Saitama Super Arena. The fight will probably take place on the Preliminary Card.

Takanori Gomi (MMA 35-13-0-1 / UFC 4-8-0-0) is one of the biggest MMA fighters Japan has ever known. The Kanagawa fighting machine made his name in the PRIDE FC organization where he was the Lightweight Champion. After PRIDE FC went bankrupt, Gomi sought salvation at the Sengoku RC organization. Soon the UFC came to the corner and the Japanese fighter was contracted by the UFC in 2010. However, Gomi has never been able to show his old level from his glory days in the UFC. In twelve UFC performances, Gomi only won four wins. His biggest victory was against American Tyson Griffin during his second fight for the organization. Gomi won this battle through KO in the first round. Gomi's last victory dates from April 2014, when the Japanese defeated the American Isaac Vallie-Flagg through a unanimous decision. Since then, Gomi has lost four fights from Myles Jury, Joe Lauzon, Jim Miller & Jon Tuck all through TKO or Submission and all in the first round. The question is whether Gomi can still turn the tide into the UFC.

Dong Hyun Kim (MMA 14-8-3 / UFC 1-2-0) not to be confused with the Welterweight Dong Hyun "Stungun" Kim, arrived in 2015 as late replacement for Hyun Gyu Lim in the UFC. He debuted against Dominique Steele. In a fight where Kim seemed to be the winning hand, Kim lost by slam in the third round. Kim received a reprieve in the UFC against Mexico Marco Polo Reyes in May 2016. In a fight that certainly belongs to the Top 5 of Fight of the Year for 2016 Kim lost in the third round via TKO. Partly because Kim has shown that he is coming to fight, the UFC offered him a third fight. In December 2016, Kim fought against Brendan O'Reilly. Kim won the competitive battle by decision. Kim was tscheduled to fight in Auckland earlier this year against Thibault Gouti. However, Gouti was ruled out due to illness a few hours before the fight
.

Ugh.

Needless to say (I also thought this before the Tuck fight), this has to be Gomi's last chance in the UFC. In his last four fights, he has been brutally stopped in the first half of the first round each time.

Maestro is barely in the lower tier of the division. Each of Gomi's fights are getting harder to watch.

If Gomi has to fight again, let it be against BJ Penn in a match that requires both of them to retire afterwards.

Didn't even know Gomi was still fighting. Oh, the good ol' days when Gomi was p4p #1.

Gomi is done as a top fighter so the best thing to do is just put him in there with scrappers and watch the bombs fly because he can still entertain.

Damn I wanted Penn vs Gomi 2. This fight makes the most sense. I hope BJ is kept in mind as a replacement.

This is Gomi last chance to ear some money with the UFC. He must retire or sign with a smaller organization.

Kim's fight against Reyes was amazing. Very entertaining.

Not only has Gomi lost a lot of fights but he hasn't looked that good in them either, unfortunately. I don't mind who wins this one i just hope it's competitive and Gomi puts up a good scrap.

I miss the fireball kid, as much as I'd like to see him again I know I never will.

Cracked chin versus iron chin. Could be a really bad out for the fireball kid.

Didn't even know Gomi was still fighting. Oh, the good ol' days when Gomi was p4p #1.

Nah, he never really was. BJ would've beat him any time between 2003 (when he actually did finish Gomi) and 2007 (when Nick Diaz beat Gomi).

It's crazy how Gomi and Penn were intertwined as the #1 and #2 lightweights at one point, and now look at them<mma1>

I don't think Gomi has it in him to compete with any fighter, anymore. Gomi just makes me really sad to watch, and it's a terrible idea to have hom on the Japan card.

Like others are saying, he should fight BJ Penn in a double-retirement match. That way, no-one gets hurt, and we still get to see one of our idols get a win.

How the hell does Gomi still have a job with the UFC?

Will Akiyama and Kid Yamamoto be on this card too? Lol

What in the serious blue fuck is this?

WHY is Gomi still under contract?! His last win was in 2001!

Gomi lost his last 4 fights in less then a combined 8 minutes.
