The pro mainland candidate Han Kuo-yu was defeated in a landslide by Tsai Ing-wen.

President Tsai Ing-wen took a dig at the mainland after her win, stating "I'm sure our friends in Hong Kong will be happy."

Post election results the PRC / Mainland arrogantly maintains that Taiwan is a part of China.

China's president Xi Jinping says the 2 systems 1 country approach of Hong Kong is the best solution for Taiwan. But President Tsai rejects this. Looking at Hong Kong and China's treatment of minorities, the Taiwanese would have to be brain damaged to allow the mainland to control their lives.

TAIPEI (Reuters) - China will not change its position that Taiwan belongs to it, Beijing said on Sunday, after President Tsai Ing-wen won re-election and said she would not submit to China’s threats, as state media warned she was courting disaster.

“No matter what changes there are to the internal situation in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Trump admin should move towards recognizing Taiwan and help it on defense. The US really should do everything it can to confront and limit China's power. Their economic rise has really emboldened their imperialistic mindset.

With what's happening in Hong Kong and China's actions, it's a wonder the fervent nationalists didn't win 99.99% of the vote.

If I'm not mistaken, her opponent was successfully portrayed and unfairly perhaps, as a pro-China unification candidate. In the case, it's a wonder the people didn't vote 99% anyone perceived as being pro-China at this time.

Yes China will wait til Trump is out of office before they act against Taiwan. Western nations will turn a blind eye.

No. Our foreign policy especially in Asia didn’t start with Trump. Obama is the one who initiated the pivot to Asia.

Trump is just far more openly aggressive.

    58% vs 39%
Quite a trouncing, but I’m surprised after all the HK mess that 39% would still support the KMT.

The whole legitimacy of the Communist party is built on two things, a strong economy and a unified country. If they admitted Taiwan is lost, it would be instant political suicide. The government would get lynched within a week by nationalists. Kosovo gained independence from Serbia for two decades now, yet no Serbian politician will recognize it. While China is an authoritarian state, there are still political landmines that CCP dares not to step on.

CCP whipped up nationalist sentiment for the past 3 decades, and now they back themselves into a corner.

Those 39% are Chinese Nationalists optimistic about a future where the Chinese people dominate Asia and the world?
Those 39% have strong family ties to the mainland and do not see a Taiwan dominated by the mainland as a threat , because they are all the same people ?

A while back I was vacationing in the Caribbean. The hotel I stayed at featured a Chinese cable channel. It was pure propaghanda, though not obnoxious. One program talked about how Taiwanese and mainland Chinese are the same people related by blood, so there should be a union. The program had Taiwanese talking about their shared origins and having family on the mainland.

Seeing that TV channel, which was provided free by the Hotel, and Chinese vehicles on the road that were copies of well known Western brands, made me realize how much the CCCP is penetrating the globe, extending their soft power.

What I innitially thought was a Mercedes Sprinter van was a Chinese copy that looked very much like the Sprinter, right down to the grille and embelem. I only realized it was a copy when I got up close.

I love Taiwan. I would be heartbroken if cross-straight reunification ever happened.
