And they were successful.
All students in a UK school, aging between 11 and 16 successfully protested against changes that were being forced upon them which they claimed was an act of racism. They sat in the playground chanting ‘say no to racism’ with ‘anti fascism’ and ‘anti racism’ placards held up by little girls and boys.
The school were bringing in new laws which meant that hair must be tied up including Afro hair as this could block someone’s vision when in class. Also Muslim girls were only allowed to wear black hijabs, colourful hijabs were now being banned.
The students wrote up a list of demands which were passed on to the headmaster of the school. The demands were:
Afro hairstyles to be allowed as students felt it clearly targeted black students.
History class to include more recognition of Black history as students felt there was a lack of this especially during black history month.
Colourful hijabs to be allowed, students felt this was discrimination as it challenged young Muslim girls identity.
Gendered uniforms to be abolished as students felt it ostracised non binary and gender non conforming students and those who are struggling with their gender.
The headmaster gave in to these demands, the students were successful in their protests.
