Six NATO countries squared off last week in the Strong Europe Tank Challenge, a two-day competition that pitted some of the alliance’s best tank crews against each another in a series of events centered on armored warfare.

The challenge, which concluded Thursday and was held in Grafenwoehr, Germany, was the first of its kind there since 1991. The competition was designed to foster “military partnership” while showcasing the ability of NATO countries to work together, according to a U.S. Army statement.

Germany took top honors in the competition, followed by Denmark and Poland in second place and third place respectively.

The challenge, co-hosted by U.S. Army Europe and the German Bundeswehr, is a nod to the Cold War era and a tacit acknowledgment that NATO will need well-trained conventional forces if it ever has to go to war with a newly-emboldened Russia.

“You’ve got to continue to train; you have to invest the time and resources in the training to have the best possible deterrent force,” Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of U.S. Army Europe, told Stars and Stripes.

Love em, hope soon the new tank designs start entering Euro armies.

still remember T55s and T72 rolling down my street at night going from base to exercise, loud sobs and the whole neighborhood shook like a sob. Even had some shells of ww2 tanks in near by fields.

Leo 3 is currently in early planning. The united States is actively testing m1A3, but no one knows what it is.

Germany probably had their only up to date tank show up, rest are sporting wooden turrets with fire being simulated with crew shouting bang bang :)

Poland has more Armour brigades then Germany. No, im not shitty you..

I heard polish immigrants are being mistreated in Germany, seems to me like the fatherland needs to protect them, reverse blitzkrieg.

M1A3 is an upgrade from refurbished Abrams, not newly produced units.

Russian armor development fell behind the West after the collapse of Soviet Union, but generally it was on par during the 1970's and 1980's. I would even say the Soviets had better gun and armor, but their FCS and night combat capability were generally shit.

I'm still having a hard time figuring out where the T-14 fits. Semi on par with nato standard?

it looks nothing like it was suppose..

even on the spec sheet it was suppose to have a big 30mm cannon and phalanx...has none of those..

That was only a fan made CGI, and has little basis in reality. A tank is not about stacking as many weapons on it as you can. The more weapon or bigger gun you put on it, the less ammo it can carry in its limited interior space. Those 30mm auto-cannons and 140mm main gun are unlikely to make their way to an actual production model tank.

One of the issues with Russian APFSDS round is that the penetrator rod is considerably shorter compared to that of NATO 120mm guns. Despite having a bigger caliber, it doesn't have the same penetration. I am not sure whether they improved on that on the T-14. At this point, very little is known about the tank. However, I don't see it as anything revolutionary like it was with the T-64.

Bulat is whats leftof the T-64, im not sure how relevant it is now.

T-64 was revolutionary because it was the first operational tank with composite armor and 125mm gun. At the time of its introduction, it outclassed all NATO tanks.

Bulat is an Ukrainian upgrade package, and I wouldn't trust Ukraine to produce anything decent these days. In Soviet times, the tank assembly plant in Khariv used to produce T-64 and T-80, but it required parts and components from outside Ukraine SSR. With the war in Donbass, they have no more access to those from Russia. The fact that the T-84 lost Thailand's tank contract to China should tell you something.
