    Hey everyone

I have started training bjj this year after 6 years off. I used to only train no gi and trained for a few years but never competed in grappling.
In a class yesterday I received my 4th white stripe on my white belt and the it got wrapped with red tape. Never heard or seen anything about this and just wondered if anyone can advise what this means?
In case it matters I am over 16 so next belt should be blue.

    Thanks for any advise

    Who really cares.

By advanced white you should be competitive with some blues anyways. The variation/overlap in skill between good whites to good blues is massive.

    It is mostly curiosity.

as for skill level I am tapping most of the blue belts and can last the round with most of the purples without being caught in anything.

Ask your instructor the signification, maybe he has some objectives for you example: proving yourself in a competition

Who cares who you tap! It’s training curiosity isn’t the only thing you’re after it’s reassurance and the stripes represent that why come on a forum and ask then brag about who you tap and don’t tap to?

just enjoy the journey and when you’re a purple brown or black you’ll look back at this post and laugh at yourself.

How do you roll with your teammates? Are you spazzing? Are you using brute strength when you engage subs? Maybe your blue and purple belts teammates are letting you to improve your techniques so you need to be smoother and chaining techniques.

For the kids, it'S the 5th stripe that is red, which is the last before a belt change

Maybe the coach wants to highlight that the next step is a belt change for you too

    This seems likely

Never heard of this before so it definitely isn't some standard BJJ meaning behind it, ask him to explain if you think there is some sort of meaning

There is a kid grading system under triennial system where they used a red tape for the fourth stripes instead of a white stripe.

Well I got my blue belt the weekend before Christmas.
Apparently the gym branded blue belts were held up because of covid and quarantine into Australia apparently so I got the red stripe as an indicator for the coaches, either way I am happy as I now have my blue.
