Hola fellow strikers,
I come from a TKD background, but haven't practiced in a long time. Lately I've been into bodybuilding, but after a major surgery, I've decided to rehab and start fighting MMA. I need a good starting point. My kicking was pretty derned good back in the day, but I'll need a lot of work to get it back up to snuff. My punching has always sucked ass, but I never really had good instruction for that. I used to have really weak/thin wrists back when I did TKD and remember hitting the heavy bag and occasionally buckling my wrists, though it might be different now that I've been body building and have a lot more strength.
I'm about 1-2 months from signing up with an mma studio(still rehabbing), but I'm speculating that I want my main base to be grappling because I love all the intricacies, and I've always naturally wanted to clinch and go to the ground even before I knew what bjj was. I DO NOT want to be a one dimensional fighter however, and realize how important a good muay thai or boxing skill set is.
Anyway, I was thinking of either joining Gokor's academy or Hollywood BJJ academy. You can see from their schedule they have MMA and MT instruction, but from a striker's point of view, is this just going to be horrible? Being that I'm just starting, do you think this will suffice, or should I go all out and go to a seperate MMA/Muay Thai Gym alongside a bjj studio? Would that new gym that Bas Rutten(my favorite fighter) and Randy Cotoure are opening in hollywood be a better starting point? Any other Recommendations?
