So my boss asked to speak to me today in his office and said he knows another major company is looking for a senior leader and that he would recommend me if I wanted it (i.e I would get it as he has connections). Then he asked what did I think?

I was in complete shock so did not know what to say. What would you do?

He knows that I am ambitious and capable although I have told him I do not want his job whilst he is still in it. I.e he should not fear me wanting to steal his job.

He is a good guy and we play golf regularly so maybe he was just looking out for me and thought it would be a great opportunity. Or maybe he was testing my loyalty. There is a plan in place for a promotion for me in 9 months but he said this other opportunity was there if I was in a rush. What are your thoughts?

Must say it was weird. Anything similar happened to anyone else?

Question is why would your boss/friend test your loyalty?
If he recommends it then I'd go for it if its a move forward in your career, and even if you dont get it, its not like your going to lose your job where you work now is it?

If you have nothing to lose, then go for it. You don't quit your job before getting another do you.

Is your boss Indian?
My good friend worked for a company in UK and the big boss (Indian) guy wanted to cut back 30% of the workforce without having to pay any compensation.

He did it by many stupid and crazy means resulting in the staff being fired. Sending joke emails via company computer, wearing work clothesto go outside to collect your lunch that you'd left there by mistake. All of these small things were in the company handbook as do t and you will e severely dealt with.

Be careful man. If you trust him then go ahead, if not then run for your life.

He was helping you out brah.

My former boss did the same thing for me.
The older people tend to like helping out the younger people if the feel the job would better suit them or provide more long-term options.

Looks like he's trying to get you to quit.

You are a threat and want his job. You are the ambitious type. you really think he's gonna go with your word that you dont want his job? Its clear he wants to you out to save his job. But we all know you gonna turn it down and in 9 months time you will take his job and he will lose his job. Resulting in him struggling financially, his wife leaving him and him ending up with depression

he's the adult version of Frenemy, TS. He wants you out because you're a threat, so you basically have a choice of moving on and up or playing all the power games in your current company.

Take the better job. Even if he is testing your loyalty who gives a shit? You will have the better job and will probably never see him again.

You'll just get fired at the other job. He's planned for that as well.

From his point of view it's a win-win. He gets rid of competition and gains a friend. Take the job.

Yeah, its also his way of saying Im ready to do anything to keep my job and this is best for both of us. Because if I have to destroy you to keep my job, then I will. Dont make this uglier than it has to be. Take the job and move on. There's no guarantee you will get a better opportunity in the future

shit, this is a tough one, could go either way. sometimes people go to other companies only to get laid off within the first couple months. I'd probably talk more about it with him to make my decision.

Ask him that if it didnt work out, could you come back?

It seems like he's looking out for you & that maybe there's no more room for you to grow in your company (and it seems he's not leaving anytime soon).

Thanks to all the posts. Good replies and probably on point.

Yeah, that is true. I believe he would have me back although the company may feel differently/be unable. Times are tough at the moment job wise so it would be risky to sacrifice stability for a new opportunity.

My boss has been in ihs role about 4 years and has admitted he is not going anywhere/tough to move without sacrificing something himself even within the company.

I have 50% of my MBA to complete (which I do part time) so will keep working at the job I enjoy, with people I like and finish my studies as the default plan. If something else happens then I will adjust.

Thanks for the replies though as it was definitely a first for me to be in that situation.

This is normal man and nothing to worry about or over think. Employers realize that good people are going to move up. He's just helping you out.

I've done similar things for my employees. If they are ambitious and hard-working, then I recommend they take their talents elsewhere because I know the opportunities here are too few and far between.

If I want someone gone I just fire them. I ain't no pussy manager.

Make sure you get everything promised in writing. Theres been many cases of this happening and things not turning out as they planned ie. people getting let go due to cut backs a year later after they left their original job which had long time job security.

Sounds like an offer you can't refuse.
