Stipe Miocic still unsure why he's got doubters

Statistically, Stipe Miocic is the best heavyweight in UFC history.

No one has more consecutive title defenses in the weight class than him. Not Cain Velasquez. Not Brock Lesnar. Not Tim Sylvia or Randy Couture. And for his next title defense, Miocic is more than a 2-1 favorite around -265.

But still, he thinks he’s still got his fair share of doubters out there – just like he had when he beat Francis Ngannou. And when he beat Junior Dos Santos. And when he beat Alistair Overeem.

“(It’s) just like every fight – I feel like everyone’s not really giving me a chance, like I’m a washed-up fighter or something like that,” Miocic told reporters at a media lunch today in Los Angeles.

It’s likely Cormier’s unbeaten record as a heavyweight, prior to his run at light heavyweight, that has people thinking he can beat Miocic. And there’s the romantic notion of what it would mean for Cormier to become a concurrent two-division UFC champion. He has his supporters, without question.

“‘DC’ is an amazing fighter, of course – one of the best in both weight classes: heavyweight and light heavyweight,” Miocic said. “He’s going to go out there and try to do what he does. But unfortunately, he’s not going to get it. I’m going to walk out with the belt still wrapped around my waist.”

That “and still” mantra has been what Miocic has been living on in nearly every interview for a long time now. But he hasn’t failed at it yet. Now he’s got arguably the biggest fight of his career on a huge stage with big implications for the challenger.

It could be argued that Miocic doesn’t have nearly as much to gain as Cormier does, but the stakes like that don’t mean a lot to the blue-collar Ohioan, who still works as a firefighter in between training for title fights.

But Miocic knows one thing: This is a huge fight between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world right now.

“There are a lot of great fighters on the roster, but yeah – it’s a superfight,” Miocic said. “(Demetrious) ‘Mighty Mouse’ (Johnson), Max (Holloway) and Brian (Ortega) … So many good champions. But right now, it’s a superfight and it’s what everyone wants to see. I’m excited, too.

“I’d fight anyone – ‘DC,’ Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar, whoever (after this). Whoever they want me to fight, I’ll fight. Right now, it’s ‘DC,’ so that’s all I’m worried about.”

Because the way he dominates his contenders... they become a can on the internet. He shouldn't worry about it...

I feel his pain. UFC HW champ should be something special but MMA heavy weights disappoint in general, especially when compared to the history of HW boxing.

What can be doubted at this point? He's set the record for HW defenses. People can't doubt what has already happened.

This and the fact that he don't talk shit and fight.

People don't even know what they're looking at

Someone tried to say Fedor was a better striker than him

It's because his honest responses are still, unfortunately, cookie cutter and cliche. It's no one's fault, he's everything that he can be and fans have deemed that "fair enough"

Im surprised he even cares enough to mention doubters. I dont fuck with people that think negative of me. They dont exist as far as Im concerned.

Not his fault but the division is aging badly.

I did pick him to win over JDS and Overeem. His win over Ngannou was impressive tho.

modern MMA fans for some reason think HWs aren't good at fighting, despite the fact everyone else cuts weight to avoid fighting them.

I also think in this day and Age of the Conors and Colby and all the shit talk that people do, fans often confuse quiet and humility with self doubt.

It's nothing personal, I doubt every single HW when they fight. You never know when one stray punch can land on the chin and put them to sleep

I think Stipe has to have a chip on his shoulder to fight.

I don’t see masses of ppl saying DC will dominate (doubting Stipe). I see a lot of ppl saying “I want DC to win” (including myself). But I don’t see ppl underestimating/doubting him. Stipe is just not a talker so there is little buzz prior to him fighting....and it’s made worse since the ufc doesn’t promote (by flooding us with Stipe highlights).

It seems like one of those times when everyone is saying “everyone is saying it” when they really aren’t. If Stipe wins or even dominates I don’t think many ppl would be shocked by it.

MMA has one of the dumbest fan bases of any sport. Hell they'll swear up and down that Romero's clean.

I see why people have doubted him (guilty) as some of his big wins are against older veterans ( u know who i am talking about) that have been finished multiple times already. You would think tho that the win against Francis would have changed a lot of opinions.

I'd say at least 95% of people (not me) thought he was gonna get starched.

and it still seems everyone thinks DC will dominate him as well.

i'm not so sure bout that.

full time firefighter/mma champion, wears cro cop shorts, sounds raspy like chuck liddell. what more can you ask for. guh guh guh guh GOAT

This.

Stipe seem like the kind of person who needs the struggle, needs to feel like an underdog and stay humble, because he'd be very uncomfortable with being feted, adored or - horror of horror - in the limelight for real, Conor style.

Stipe wants to remain 'just one of the guys', deep down.

Because of beating old shot fighters.

Not much of a mystery.
