I just randomly decided to look him up because I used to like to watch him fight and wanted to see if he had a win since his UFC release but it says hes retired at least on Wikipedia. Hes still so young does anyone know what the fuck happened to this guy? I feel like there must have been some sort of injury or loss of motivation to train. I never thought he would be UFC champion but I did think at one time that he could be in the top 10 when he first came into the UFC and when he moved to middleweight.

He was out for a long while with an illness which Dana said could end his career, but they never said what it was.. came back and looked bad, so guess there must still be an underlying health problem.

All I know is its crazy how long he stayed in the UFC

I think he stayed in so long because they saw potential and felt he would put it together eventually after that long layoff for god knows what since they did not tell us what it was. The first fight he had in the UFC was pretty nasty cant forget that armbar and the interview afterwards lol.

I don't know what happened, but his fight with Fukuda was awesome and if he got his stuff together he probably could've had a respectable career and become a genuine threat to a lot of his opponents. Rogan pretty much summed up his problems in the Fukuda fight; he starts out moving around a lot and mixing it up, which's when he's most effective and when you can really see his potential, then later into a fight he becomes extremely flatfooted and only throws slow single punches. If he could've fixed that he probably could've broken into the top 10 at MW eventually. It sucks, just cuz've how young he is... it's his decision, though, and if he really feels like he should retire I guess that's best for him.

Wasn't Cantwell the fighter who bragged about breaking someone's arm in his post fight interview?

Against Razak al Hassan yeah, but it turned out it was only hyper-extended. Turned me off the guy big time though.

i dont get what happened to that guy. He was such a great talent, had all the tools to be a decent fighter and had potential. He just blew it. Skill is like 10% of it when you are in there, 90% is mental. He just didnt have what it took upstairs to succeed. He lost all of his ufc fights by decision, he was never in any trouble in any fight he just got outsmarted and outworked.

You could say he cant get well.

He looked good against WEC competition and terrible against UFC competition. No mystery here.

Cantwell was the final reigning LHW champ of the WEC beating Stann in the final LHW decider fight.

He beat Stann by tko

Stann beat him by ud

So fuk u

I still remember when he timber'd Stann. Dude was nasty at one point in time.

He had a lot of potential. But obviously that didn't pan out for him. I like Cantwell, thought he could have been top 10. Oh well, not the first time this has happened to a prospect.
