On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 94% based on reviews from 16 critics.[6]

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four and called it "a splendid example of the New Western. It's also a fine movie, a wonderfully comic tale we didn't quite expect from a director who seems more at home with violence than with humor.
